Many students around the world like to attend a college or university's online education in the United States. They can take classes to earn a degree at home through the Internet.

Online learning is also called distance education. Many American colleges and universities have been offering it for years. One example is New York University in Manhattan. The School of Continuing and Professional Studies began online classes in 1992. Its Virtual College has taught more than ten thousand students from across the United States and other countries. Last year, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies launched NYU Online. It offers NYU's first online programmes to earn a bachelor's degree. Programmes are offered in three areas: leadership and management, information systems management and social science.

University officials say classes are highly interactive (互动的), where students communicate with each other and their teachers. Some classes require students to all log in at the same time so they can attend a live lecture by a professor. Students can also ask questions and work together on team projects. The university says classes are taught by NYU professors who have been trained in online teaching. International students must take two admissions tests before they can be accepted into the programme. They are the SAT and the TOEFL. The cost of attending NYU Online depends on how many classes a student takes. It can cost as much as 15,000 dollars a year. NYU offers no financial help for international students in this programme.

Many other schools offer online education. Students should be especially careful of programmes that offer a degree in return for little or no work. These are known as diploma mills (文凭加工厂), and are illegal in the United States. Educational advisers also say that before you enter any programme, make sure the work will be recognized in your country. You should also make sure the schools you are considering are accredited (公认合格的).

Potatoes are a traditional part of American meals. But people are not eating as many potatoes as they did in the past. The United States Department of Agriculture reports that it expects potato consumption to decrease during the next fourteen years.

Growers say one main reason is that more people are worrying about getting too fat. Several popular weight-reducing plans restrict (限制) carbohydrates. Potatoes are high in carbohydrates. American potato farmers also face competition from foreign growers. To deal with these problems, a non-profit  organization is working to get farmers to limit potato production. The United Potato Growers of America (UPGA) was formed more than a year ago. Its members plant most of the potatoes in the nation.

Limiting production breaks with tradition. Over the years, many American potato growers have done their best to grow large crops. The more potatoes they produced, the more they had to sell. But too many potatoes for sale mean too little profit. So the potato growers organization wants to reduce the amount of potatoes reaching the market. The goal is to keep demand strong.

Members promise to reduce their planting of potatoes. They also say they will not send potatoes to market when the supply becomes too large. The idea began about two years ago when potato growers from the state of Idaho formed the United Potato Growers of Idaho. The group expanded its membership to become a national organization.

5. Which of the following has NOTHING to do with the fact that farmers produce fewer potatoes?

A. The price of potatoes decreased a lot.     B. More potatoes come from foreign countries.

A. Potatoes     B. Potatoes, less popular in America

C. UPGA     D. Farmers organized to control potato supply

Many Americans find silence uncomfortable while staying in a buffet(自助餐) or at a dinner. So in the United States there is a widespread practice of making “small talk” in certain social situations. Small talk deals with various topics superficially, simply for the sake of keeping a conversation going. The topics might include the weather, sports, college courses, clothing, food, etc. Small talk is especially useful at social gatherings when you meet someone for the first time, or when polite conversation is expected but no serious discussion is desired.

It is common but not necessarily expected that one knows someone in a group before engaging with him or her in conversation. However, at a party or other informal social gathering, a simple “May I join you?” and a self-introduction is normally sufficient to gain acceptance into a group and to join in a conversation. In some places, such as the lobby of a concert hall or theatre, a waiting room or a classroom, it is common for strangers to start a conversation even without an introduction.

Despite the informal phenomenon that is all over the US society, people in the States expect those whom they speak to to put aside whatever they are doing and listening. As a rule, the conversation distance between two people is at least two or three feet. Standing more closely will make many Americans feel uneasy.

8. What's probably not the common topic for small talk?

A. Weather.     B. Doing shopping.

C. Career design.     D. Paper news.

9. The underlined word “superficially” in the first paragraph is nearest in meaning to ___.

10. Which of the following statements is WRONG?

A. People in the US hate standing too close while talking.

B. A small talk is usually carried out between acquaintances (熟人).

C. Even strangers can start a conversation without an introduction.

D. It's uncomfortable for many Americans to keep silent during waiting time.
