Globalization is developing at an astonished speed. As Jan(2009) said “This process of ‘globalization is often portrayed as a positive force which is unifying widely different societies, integrating them into a ‘global village, and enriching all in the process.” Globalization has influenced the world in many aspects, such as, economy, culture, science and medicine. Of course design has been influenced in a number of ways. Chinese universities, which teach design, are becoming more international, people from different countries can recognize more visual language and China is making the design into an important creative industry. Also, approximately 35 years ago, because of Chinese reform and opening up policy. China started to pay more attention to making tradition and creativity hang together. Chinese designers started to use new materials, new technology and new ideas. However, they also developed the traditional Chinese thinking. This essay will first introduce the importance of globalization. Then, it will give three examples about how globalization has influenced Chinese design. Finally, it will introduce Chinese designers have focused on both tradition and new creativity.
Globalization is ‘a process leading to greater interdependence and mutual awareness (reflexivity) among economic, political and social units in the world, and among actors in general. (Guillen quoted in Peng and Meyer, 2009, pp.15). Approximately 35 years ago, globalization has influenced the different major areas, For example, economy, culture, science and medicine. Thanks to the development of globalization, Chinese have more chances and benefits to receive the information. For example, it is much easier for Chinese people to receive news through various media, such as, newspaper, TV, radio, and Internet, whenever or wherever they want. It means Chinese have more chances and benefits to communicate with other different cultures. So, we need to catch the all the chances from globalization and develop in different aspects. Of course, we need to develop Chinese design.
Approximately before 35 years ago, design began to become popular in China. Although, it occurred slightly late, the development speed of design was quite fast. The rapid development of globalization really has created a huge market for China, and also brought infinite business opportunities for design. As a result, design has been influenced by globalization. This essay will give three main examples. First of all, more universities, which teach design, are becoming more international. Many Chinese universities are cooperating with developed countries, which have more advanced teaching experiences. According to Xin (2012) “Art and design schools in China today focus on creative problem solving.”(pp.3) These design universities are learning western education patterns. They are paying more attention to training the independent thinking ability and independent creation of the students. So that students can learn more advanced design methods and successful design works. The next example is that people from different countries can recognize more visual language. Because of globalization, many countries have strengthened the effect of communication. More visual languages are becoming popular, which means that the meanings and the emotions of the design works can be understood by the whole world. Finally, the main point is that China is making the design into an important creative industry. For example, China has a design industrial park in Shenzhen. Xin (2012) believes that “As more companies in China look for unique ideas, Chinese designers will respond, and the idea of individual intellectual ownership will become more widely accepted.”(pp.3) Due to globalization, China is putting design industry into a more important position.
China started to realize the importance of combination at about 35 years ago, so it tried to combine tradition and creativity together. First of all, Chinese designers started to use new material, new technology and new ideas. The first change is the popular use of new materials among designers. Under the impact of globalization, the new materials are becoming the foundation and guidance of the advanced technology. The usage of new material can influence the creativity and innovation of the design, which reflects obviously in the field of fashion design. With the Industrial Revolution, fashion design is changing from only focus on the appearance of the clothes to pay more attention to the comfort, environmental protection, and functional design. So, as for China, there are a lot of new materials are being used, such as corn protein fiber. The applying of new materials improved the quality of the Chinese design. The second change is the use of new technology, which cannot be separate with design. As Ritzer(2010) states“ Science today is inherently a global enterprise as its knowledge base is formed by inputs from many parts of the world and that knowledge is disseminated virtually everywhere.” (pp.45) Because of globalization, China has more chances to study the more advanced new technology. As a result, there are many kinds of new technology applications appear in China in gradually. For example, the development of the computer technology in Graphic Design. Many different software provide greater convenience for the designers, save the design time, and make it so that their ideas can be clearly shown. The third change shows in the processing of accepting new ideas. Three important factors in design are creativity, composition, and color. As we can see, the most important factor is creativity. As Li (2011) points out “Creative industries promote the transformation of the economic development model through transformation of resources, value upgrading, structural optimization, and market expansion.” (pp.3) Due to globalization, more communication makes the Chinese designers realize that we need to pay more attention on the new ideas. The government also provides more and more policies to encourage creativity.
In addition, except started to use new material, new technology, and new ideas. Chinese designers are also trying to develop the traditional Chinese thinking. The traditional Chinese culture is the national culture, which can reflect the national characteristics and the evolution of a civilization. China is ancient country with 5000 years histories, we have had many cultural elements. For example, the logo of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, used the Chinese seal and Chinese handwriting. Designers are using the traditional thinking in the Advertising Design. The application can reflect the culture in advertising, get the customers recognize in mind and transmit the real meaning to the customers. Finally, Chinese designer are making tradition and creativity hang together, use it in many different kinds of design works and make more and more people are able to accept Chinese design or Chinese designers.
In conclusion, under the impact of globalization, Chinese design has been influenced in many different aspects and got a wide range of expression. Moreover, as we can see, Chinese designers are trying to change ourselves and increasing the communication with other countries. Although, in my opinion, there are many things we can do in the future. Chinese designers still need to develop the traditional Chinese thinking, make each Chinese design work has their own characteristics, and expand the impact of the Chinese design works in the world, so every design student has the responsibility to work hard and do more for the development of design. All in all, globalization affected the design, and make Chinese design better and better.
