【摘要】It在句法、语用和篇章中都起着重要的作用。在句法里，作为赘代词，it起着虚主语作用;尽管意义虚无，但它是保证句子合法不可或缺的成分。在语用中，it的指代作用可分为话语指示和指称;作为指称的it，或内指，或外指;内指时，可进一步细分为前指和后指。在语篇里，it起着衔接作用，用于指代当前焦点中的话题实体，并随着篇章的发展而继续进行下去;恰当地使用它能使语篇结构紧凑，行文自然。

【Abstract】“It” plays an important role in such aspects of language as syntax， pragmatics and text linguistics. In the field of syntax， “it”， as a pleonastic pronoun， functions as expletive. Although “it” is semantically meaningless， it is not syntactically unnecessary， without which some sentences will be ungrammatical. In pragmatics， as a pronoun， “it” functions as deixis. This deixis acts as text deixis or reference. As reference， “it” can be either endophoric or exophoric. Endophor is further divided into anaphpor and cataphor. In text linguistics， “it” is utilized to make a text cohesive. “It” refers to the topical entity of current focus， and makes the text move on smoothly. When it is used appropriately， the whole text flows on cohesively and naturally.

一、引言

It 是英语中最活跃、使用频率最高的词汇之一，其使用频率在英国英语中排名第十，美国英语中排名十一。因此，中国期刊全文数据库（网络版）里有数百篇文章对it的用法进行讨论。这些论文大多集中在讨论代词it具有指代事物、人的作用，以及它在句子中充当形式主语、宾语。但大多数作者也只是指出it在句子中是形式主语、宾语，很少有人论述其作形式主语或形式宾语的原因。本文将运用句法理论来阐释为什么it是虚主语，而不是实主语;虚主语it的作用，以及使用的限制条件。本文还将讨论it在语用学中的指示作用，分析指代事物、人的代词it可以是话语指示，还可以起指称作用，并详细讨论it的各种指称。最后，我们还将对it在篇章中所起的衔接作用进行探讨。
