Harriet Tubman was a great and brave woman in American history. She helped hundreds of slaves escape to freedom.

She was born as a slave in Maryland in about 1823. Harriet and her family were all slaves. In 1849 she ran away, because she wanted to be free. She walked at night and hid (隐藏) in the daytime. Some good people often helped slaves escape to freedom in the North and in Canada and they helped her. With their help Harriet got to Philadelphia.

After she escaped she returned to the South 20 times in 10 years to help free other slaves. She brought her parents to Auburn, New York. In 1850 it was a crime to help slaves run away. This did not stop her.
