When it comes to Murder of Genovese, it always occurs to us that “For more than half an hour thirty-eight respectable, law-abiding citizens in Queens watched a killer stalk and stab a woman in three separate attacks in Kew Gardens.” Actually, newly related documents turned out that not all neighbors reacted apathetically to this accident, and the data alleged by Martin Gansberg was erroneous. Besides, owing to those errors in the related reports, this neighborhood showered with blames was made infamous. The exact number of the bystanders can be hardly confirmed because nobody could confirm who was really on the scene or who was not. It has also been proved many people had lent their hands. However, there was some delay in police commissioner, and the government did not employ best measures to deal with this accident. Therefore, in order to prevent similar accidents happen again, there remained a lot for police and government to do.

Recent researches indicate how the accident unfolded. There were two attacks in total. Moselys initial attack was punctuated by Robert Mozer, who thought it was an altercation and yelled “Leave that girl alone!” Another man, Samuel, also called the police three or four times, only to responded by nobody. So far, people didnt know how seriously Genovese was injured. Then, she made her way home through a corner and was attacked for the second time fatally. At this time, Sophie Farrer, realizing what happened, risked her life rushing to the scene, and other neighbors also came out offering their help. During this period, only two people were really cold-blooded.

It found that, some innocent errors committed in clerical work by police and were transmitted to the journalists, which then imposed blames to people in this neighborhood.

In my opinion, reflections about this accident cannot be confined in bystanders and psychologists. Polices reactions and governments solutions should also be deliberated to a large extent. On the one hand, police did not fulfill their responsibilities. Firstly, Police should have come to the scene immediately instead of shifting responsibilities to other departments. Secondly, some careless policemen concluded there were 38 thoughtless individuals, which made people in this neighborhood ostracized until now and this neighborhood a dirty place. They should have investigated the incident carefully and made a matter-of fact record. On the other hand, government played an insignificant role in this accident. What government had done was condemn continuously and get everyone become nervous, failing to perform its duty. At first, government are supposed to take lots of measures to soothe people and establish some preventive laws to ensure peoples safety or enhance individuals awareness of self-protecting. Besides, publicize peoples kindness so as to ignite peoples good will towards others. If both police and government had dealt with that incident correctly, it might get people become more willing to pass on to others morality.

To conclude, although some neighbors attitude made us reflect on the society and revealed social phenomenon such as diffusion of responsibility, it cannot be denied that then police and government should have been to blame. What authorities should do is fulfill their duties carefully and completely, centered on people to prevent additional troubles imposed on ordinary people.
