摘 要：双关语通过同音同形异义或同音异形异义的词语构成，至少涉及两种不同的意义表达，其构成及应用往往是说话人或作者有意而为之，语境在双关语存在和发挥作用过程中起了决定性作用。双关语又是一种言语行为，其效果在广告这一语域尤为明显。双关语事实上违背了方式和关联准则，产生了听话人会话含义，听话人会根据关联原则，解读双关话语背后的潜台词。对双关的语用学解读，能加深人们对这一传统修辞格理解，进一步提高言语交际的幽默性和表达性。

Abstract： Constructed on homographic or homophonic words or phrases， puns involve at least two intended messages. They are often the products of the speakers or writers intentionality or consciousness. Context plays a key role in the functioning of puns in communication. As a speech act， pun performs the three acts as was illustrated by Austin， which is widely used in advertising. Most puns flout the maxims of manner and relevance and produce implicatures on the part of the receiver. Interpreting the meaning of a pun is to pinpoint the implicatures it produces. This pragmatic understanding of pun can throw new light on the interpretation of the traditional trope.

一、 引言

虽然双关语被认为是机智和幽默的最低级形式，但是几个世纪以来，它们一直普遍出现在文学和大众文化之中。爱尔兰作家James Joyce甚至断言，双关语比刀剑更强大（The pun is mightier than swords）。许多伟大的作家（例如Shakespeare和Wilde）在其作品中都大量使用双关语，一方面在小范围内构建笑话或幽默，另一方面将它们作为创造性语言使用的策略之一。据统计，Shakespeare的戏剧和诗歌中使用的双关语的数量达到了几千例之多。以往人们对双关语及其使用效果的研究，主要集中在结构主义语言学的框架内进行。对双关语的研究文献虽然庞大，但大部分研究的结论并不具有确定性。（Attardo 1994：111）本文将应用现代语用学的相关理论和概念，揭示其构成与功能的内部机制，以便更好地理解和运用这一古老的修辞格。
