摘  要：随着人际交往的日益频繁，英语委婉语俨然已经成为一种普遍存在的语言现象。作为一种典型的语用现象，委婉语在人际关系中的“润滑”作用达到了举足轻重的地位;更为重要的是，它反映着英美国家的价值观念和文化传统，因此了解委婉语对于熟悉英美文化、实现跨文化交际有着重要的意义。该文在简要介绍英语委婉语定义的基础上，简要阐述委婉语的语用现象，对美剧《绝望主妇》中所出现的委婉语的应用进行分析探讨。

On the Application of English Euphemism in American TV Series Desperate Housewives

Abstracts： With the increasing frequency of interpersonal communication， English euphemism has become a common language phenomenon. As a typical pragmatic phenomenon， euphemism plays an important role in the lubrication of interpersonal relations. More importantly， it reflects the values and cultural traditions of British and American countries. Therefore， the understanding of euphemism is of important significance for us to get familiar with the Western culture and to put the cross-cultural communication into practice. In the American TV series Desperate Housewives， euphemisms have been used a lot as the way to express feelings such as fear， anxiety， shyness， vanity， which reflect culture， customs and values from different ethic group. On the basis of the definition， this thesis gives a brief analysis of the euphemism used in American TV series Desperate Housewives.

委婉語是一种重要的文化现象和语言概念，在社会活动和人际交往中具有不可替代的作用。每种语言都有自己的委婉语，英语也是如此。说到语言，人们通常选择直接描述事物。然而，由于不愉快的话题确实存在于每一种文化中，是语言中不可忽视的一部分，人们试图对事物进行含蓄的评价，以避免不必要的尴尬，这就是委婉语最初出现的原因。委婉语由于其强大的说服力和良好的修饰效果，已遍及人们的日常生活当中。

在美国电视剧《绝望主妇》中，代表美国中产阶级的4位女主角总是恰到好处地展现出她们的文化身份。不可否认，委婉语作为其中一种常用表现方式在展现4位女主角的高层次函养方面起到了很大的作用。它们涵盖了日常生活的各个方面。委婉语在这部剧中被广泛使用，因为剧中的主要人物是女性，女性的心理反应更加柔和和敏感，也更加关注周围的事物，所以她们的表现方式更加深思熟虑。……
