Originally,Monika,a Polish architect in Chongqing, was preparing to leave this city.

However,Monika ended up staying in Chongqing and married, for she was falling in love.

In 2014 Monika had worked as an architect in Chongqing for a full year before returning to Poland. She held a small party with a sense of farewell.

But she failed to leave. At the party, she met Chen Weijie,a young man from Chongqing, and they fell in love at first sight.

Fall in love and get married. Monika has been in Chongqing for five years now. In addition going to work and taking care of children,Monika will make DIY handmade furniture and manage her B&B in her spare time. Monika's life in Chongqing is busy but fulfilling.

Design Her Own Home

“When I first met her,I noticed how tall she was.”her husband,Chen Weijie recalls meeting Monika for the first time.

At a coffee shop,we met Monika, who stood out in the crowd in a black T-shirt and trousers, with long waist-length blond hair and 1.82 meters tall.

Monika married Chen Weijie in July 2015. After the baby was born in January of this year,Monika took him along with her all the time.

The baby has black eyes and blond hair.“He doesn't look like me in any way except his fingers.”Chen Weijie joked.

Monika works as an architect for a company in Chongqing. After the baby was born, she can only go to work for half a day, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The rest of the time is taken up by her kid.

Although Monika is busy,as an architect, she still uses her spare time to design the decoration of her own house.

Monika turns on her computer and looks at the design sketch of the house. She designed her house to be full of white, with curved or straight lines. She thinks that black, white and gray are the best match because of the saturation. “And there is no living room,no TV,only an open hall and an open kitchen.None of us watch TV and we're all vegetarians,so our cooking doesn't produce smoke, thus there's no need for a kitchen."

Although they are transnational couples, their living habits are very similar. “My parents thought we were acting a little strange at first, but then they accepted it.”Chen Weijie said.

Monika believes that design is not only about function, but also about one’s personality, and that only when it fits into a person's personality will it be comfortable.

DIY Reforming the Old Things by DIY

The two of them usually do not play mobile phones and watch television, but they have a common hobby, that is at home studying various tools and making furniture supplies. They pick up waste wood and branches in the dustbin and take them home and make a simple wall decoration out of ready-made tools and materials.

“We usually buy almost everything online except vegetables in the supermarket,so we have a lot of cardboard boxes at home and we will transform them to Nordic style containers.” Chen Weijie said.

Last August, when many people came to Chongqing for tourism, the couple wanted to run a B&B called Monika House, where Monika did the whole project herself. And the decoration in the hostel, including the ornaments on the wall, was all made by herself.

As an architect,Monika is particularly interested in Chongqing's buildings. “There are a lot of things that you cannot see in other cities, such as the rotating bridge in Nanping. What is the most incredible is the renovation of old buildings, such as the TESTBED2.”Monika said.

A few years of life in Chongqing have given Monika a deeper understanding of Chongqing. “It must be difficult to build in a mountainous city like Chongqing compared to plain cities,”she said.

“I have done a design pilot project on the redevelopment of the Ciqikou (Shuangbei) factory area. I once asked myself whether buildings could accommodate the same number of people without high-rise buildings, and if so,whether they would be better. The result I get is full of imagination for the future. The 'villa' style of life is integrated with high-density buildings, and there are also plenty of yards and patios to improve the lighting.” Monika believes that this could happen in Chongqing in the future.

The Disharmony and Harmonious Beauty of Chongqing Architecture

One of the impressions given to Monika by Chongqing is that its unique geographical appearance is intertwined with modern high-rise buildings.

“Its advantage lies in its mountainous terrain. You can see buildings of different shapes, and when you go to different floors, the scenery is different.”as a half Chongqing native,Monika has also experienced the “light rail through buildings”,“as people living in this city,we have become accustomed to it. But for people from other cities or foreigners,it will be very rare.” Monika said that the video of “light rail through buildings” had become a hit in Poland. “The video has been widely distributed in Poland and has been seen by a lot of people,” Monika said.

“My first impression of Chongqing is that it is a very complex city, where buildings of different styles meet together and don't have to blend in with the surrounding environment. For example, you can see a theater somewhere and it doesn't have much in common with other buildings around it,whether its style or color.” Monika said, but oddly enough, this did not affect the beauty of coordination at all.

One of the characteristics of Chongqing architecture is that it tends to be visually grander. But Monika believes that some buildings can integrate with the surrounding environment better. One example is the Chaotian Yangfan,“I would like people to see the soul of the city and the rivers.”

In Monika's view,Chongqing has a very unique river view, where the Yangtze River and the Jialing River meet. “Chongqing's building shape is completely different from other places. For example,in Europe, you can hardly see a 30-story residential building, but in Chongqing, buildings with 30,40 or even 50 floors can be seen everywhere.”

Chongqing is becoming more and more international, and different buildings can be seen here every year. “It's an opportunity for architects like me from Europe to work with Chinese architects to create more comfortable and more beautiful buildings,” Monika said with a smile.
