摘 要：“单位”作为中国社会结构的基本组成单元，是具有鲜明中国特色的术语。文章将“单位”一词的中文释义与其较为常用的英文译词unit进行对比，借助语料分析该词英译现状、存在的问题及原因，并从翻译的多样化及具体化等方面对该词的英译提出相应建议。

Abstract： As a basic component of Chinese social structure， “danwei” is a term with distinctive Chinese characteristics. This paper compares the definition of “danwei”with that of its closest and most commonlyused equivalent “unit” in English， analyzes the present status in translating “danwei” with the assistance of corpora and puts forward relevant suggestions in terms of diversity and specificity.

引 言

根据《现代汉语词典》的释义，“单位”一词主要有两层含义：一是指计算事物数量的标准，如“米”为计量长度的单位，“秒”为计算时间的单位，“克”为计算重量或质量的单位等；二是指机关、团体或属于机关、团体的各个部门[1]。在《汉英大词典》中，“单位”一词的对应译文为：①（计量事物的标准量的名称）unit （as a standard of measurement），长度单位 a unit of length、货币单位 monetary unit；②（机关、团体或属于一个机关、团体的各个部分）unit （as an organization， department， division， section， etc.），附属单位 affiliated unit、基层单位 basic unit； grassroots unit、行政单位 administrative unit[2]。我们发现，“单位”的这两层释义在该汉英词典中都使用了同一个英语对应词unit。

英语unit一词源于拉丁文unus，是16世纪末文艺复兴时期发明的一个数学用语，表示数字“一”。这个词进入英语后，由原来的数学术语进一步抽象为构成整体的基本“单位”。MerriamWebsters Collegiate Dictionary（《韦氏大学词典》）中对unit的基本释义为the smallest whole number greater than zero： ONE. 大于零的最小整数单位，即“一”[3]。《新牛津英汉大词典》对unit的释义为两层：① an individual thing or person regarded as single and complete， especially for purpose of calculation； each of the individuals or collocations into which a complex whole may be analysed（构成整体的人、物等的）单位、单元。这些构成整体的基本单位，可以是复杂机械的部件、组件；住房的单元；医院等机构中具有特殊功能的部门；大部队的小分队；课程的单元；产品单品等。② a quantity chosen as a standard in terms of which other quantities may be expressed计量单位、记数单位、长度单位、电流单位等[4]。……
