Abstract[]ObjectiveTo investigate the direct economic loss caused by nosocomial infections. MethodsA 1∶1 matched case-control study was conducted. Cases (n =111) were patients with nosocomial infections on surgical system from 2 to 86 years old, and controls (n =111) were patients with non-hospital infections who had been admitted to the same hospital infected by age, sex, disease, etc. By analysis among 111 pairs of patients with medical expenses, to evaluat the direct economic loss caused by nosocomial infections. ResultsThe median of total medical expenses in case group was 37 943.64 yuan, that is 1.97 times of the control group (z=-7.179, P<0.001). Drug expenses took up the largest part of the extra medical care expenses, followed by the cost of materials and treatment. The median of average hospitalization days in case group was 20 days, 8 days longer than that in the control group (z=-7.088, P<0.001). ConclusionsNosocomial infections will greatly increase health care costs, extend the average hospitalization days of patients, reduce bed turnover and lessen hospital revenue. Therefore, we should gradually bring economic loss caused by nosocomial infections into hospital management in order to improve the quality of medical care. Prevention and control of nosocomial infections will be bound to achieve significantly social and economic benefits.
