About the territory

The Chile Central Valley, is a specialized space. Formed by a processed nature, and manipulated according to the production of food and supplies. This rural landscape is a live landscape, with memory, charged with a biological and social background. This, in short, is generating an extensive tissue. To our understanding, such tissue is both material and cultural, meaning objective and subjective. As an image, such tissue represents the accumulation of marks (roads, crops, plots, channels) from the processes developed by its inhabitants, which in sum turn out to be an architectural space.

About the architecture

The project starts as a strategy of two incomplete cubes, which are confronted to define a space where production happens, and it is transformed by this production, meaning that is a space open for change. The first cube is metallic and protects from rain and sun, the second is made of untreated wood, with a shell that tries to match the environment and which can be easily repaired.

All the materials and building techniques can be understood as common, accessible, and secure the subsequent relation with the building. Open towards the landscape it permits a ventilated space, but also, it allows for the built mass, the horizon, the crops, the soil, and the nature to be included with its environment. □(Andrés Maragaño)

1x14 Pallet Square (1 plan, 14 sections), Teno, Chile, 2013

Exterior view

Area: 267.65 m2

The origin of this project comes from the study of leftover materials in the region, mostly from the Curico and Talca provinces. This research shows the Wooden Pallet as a repetitive material with identity, in both urban and rural areas, with an interesting structural capacity, low cost and easy to manipulate.

After this material research and having a defined construction method, a research on which places and programs are suitable is conducted. The chosen place is a public strip in the San Sebastián de Teno village. From the research, this is the area with the largest amount of pallets, given the existence of many fruit companies in the town, which drive its main economy and provide the highest percentage of jobs.

The story of the strip tarts five years ago, where a typical rammed-earth house existed, which after the urbanization of the area and the strong housing demand, ceased to exist leaving only its former trees.

The project is located where the house existed and tries to rescue the significance it had. So the first decision is to level down the 10mx10m square of the former house, as a gesture to its void.

The second operation is to restore the life that could have happened in a patio under the shadow of a tree, and for that the mass is designed following the construction method defined during the research stage. This volume has the particularity of presenting dynamic faces, influenced by the plowing of the agricultural fields. It is built by twelve rows of wooden pallets modules 70cm wide, a size that is suitable for a pedestrian path, and its level is raised 1.15m to create an instance to overlook the valley from under a tree, and therefore under its shadow, the wind and the sound of the leaves.

In this way the project is defined as a square formed by modules of leftover material, with the main objective of forming a place, respecting every element in its context and making it an active part of it. This public space will provide the neighborhood with a place to stay, appreciate the landscape, and entertain themselves.□(Jonnattan Silva Ortega)

Popular Baths in Linares, Chile, 2014

Exterior view

The project is conceived from the personal motivation of the student to provide his birth town with a space that could accommodate its many facets in one of its many vulnerable places.

That's how an opportunity to act on the Popular Baths of Linares appear, located over the Ancoa River in the south periphery of the city. The baths, very visited through all the seasons of the year, had government designed installations that didn't helped the potential and beauty of the place: The paused and transparent waters of the Ancoa river, free from contamination, act as a mirror of the surrounding trees that reach out to the bank of the river while providing it with a background music.

The craft of soldering learn by the student, inherited from his father, allowed him during the previous years to gather leftover steel elements from his work so he can use them later as part of his project to obtain his architecture degree. The 250mm×50mm×3mm steel channel was the most abundant material he could gather, and therefore the most useful for this project.

The economy of the material and the precision in which the benches were designed, made them deeply fit with the other elements from nature –which follow the same principles of formal efficiency– in a way that the autonomy of these red elements is incorporated into the landscape just as another species, that dialogues and complements – without trying become the protagonist – the existing species and situations of the place.□(Glenn Deulofeu)

Maitenhuapi Popular Baths, Talca, Chile, 2014

Exterior view

The project is located in a popular bath in the San Rafael District, conceived as a response to a temporal landscape in crisis. The landscape in this case is an open natural bath, for public use, located on a rural district with limited resources. The main issue comes from the heavy load during the summer, which leaves several amounts of litter, turning the place into a micro dump by the end of the season. On the other side, the rise of the river during the winter modifies the area by leaving a large amount of sediment by the bank. These two conditions, if uncontrolled, will lead to a constant decay of the area.

The project looks to open an opportunity towards the development of different activities in the baths. Given the extent of the area and the non-existence of artificial elements, a new geometry is proposed, not present in the nature, which generates a tension to define a specific area which is used as the beach of the bath. This new geometry becomes a limit and a trace in the landscape that will recognize and give character to the beach, entrance, and parking.□(Romina Andrea Poblete Sepúlveda)

Comments

WANG Lu: Completed by the students of Talca University, these four projects, be it in regards to the wood-paneled plaza, water area or auxiliary production facilities, are based on careful research in commonly used materials, construction methods and site features. The site-specific landscape represents a sequel of the local context in its interference with natural or cultural landscapes. For aspiring architects, it is truly exciting to see their own projects come into fruition already in their student days.

SHE Yishuang: Just adding a little bit

From this group of student works, we can see some directions of Chile's architectural education: the response and reflection to natural environment, the application and experience of life materials, the attention and activation to rural space. Not all design stories are started that intensely and dramatically, but combined with local context gently, just adding a little bit of new things.
