Title: Environmentalism and Allegory in Zhang Weis Novels
Author: Ling Chung
Abstract: Since the mid-1980s, an increasing number of literary works focus on environmental issues, conveying the authors nostalgia for nature and repulsion for commercialism and industrialization. Among these, Zhang Wei presents environmental ideas in his fictions by employing imaginative allegorical narratives, Chinese myths, folklore, legends, and Taoist and Confucian concepts. The Song of Hedgehog employs imaginative, unique allegorical narratives of hybridity and promotes environmental ideas based on Chinese traditional thoughts and on a profound, romantic love for nature. This paper will delineate Zhangs ideas about nature and environmentalism with detailed description of the allegorical narratives and traditional elements in his novels September Allegory and The Song of Hedgehog.
