王维是唐代最重要的诗人之一。王维的诗歌，在英语世界中也拥有大量的读者，其代表作，大多有十几种不同版本的英语译文。美国翻译家艾略特·温伯格（Eliot Weinberger）在《阅读王维的十九种方式》中，搜集《鹿柴》一诗的英译达十三种之多。①Eliot Weinberger， Nineteen Ways of Looking at Wang Wei： How a Chinese Poem is Translated， Kingston， Rhode Island： Asphodel， 1987.温伯格的搜集范围虽然广泛，但依然被人批评不够全面，并且最晚只收至史奈德（Snyder Gary）1978年的译文。在1978年之后，又有数种王维诗集的英译面世，如余宝琳（Pauline Yu）1980年的译本②Pauline Yu， The Poetry of Wang Wei： New Translations and Commentary，Bloomington： Indiana University Press，1980.，巴恩斯通父子（Tony Barnstone and Willis Barnstone）1991年的译本③Wang Wei， Laughing Lost in the Mountains： Poems of Wang Wei，trans.Tony Barnstone， Willis Barnstone， and Xu Haixin，Hanover：University Press of New England，1991.这个译本曾于1989年在北京以“熊猫丛书”之一出版。，以及大卫·亨顿（David Hinton）2006年的译本。④Wang Wei， The Selected Poems of Wang Wei， trans.David Hinton， New York： New Directions Books， 2006.

相比之下，英语世界对于王维诗歌的专门研究，要冷清一些。一般来说，研究中国诗歌史或者唐代文学史的著作都会论及王维，如华兹生（Burton Watson）的《中国抒情文学》⑤Burton Watson，Chinese Lyricism：Shih Poetry from the Second to the Twelfth Century，New York：Columbia University Press， 1971， pp.169－179.，以及宇文所安（Stephen Owen）的《盛唐诗》⑥Stephen Owen， The Great Age of Chinese Poetry： the High T’ang， New Haven： Yale University Press， 1981.，都有专门的章节讨论王维。但是，专门研究王维的专著或论文却并不多见。
