A recent piece of news from the new ship market caused the industry attention. CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding in collaboration with China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd.(CSTC) officially won the construction order of four 38,000-ton multipurpose heavy crane vessels from HMM. This is another new ship order a CSSC shipyard took an order from Korea following last year and this year when CSSC Guangzhou Shipbuilding International won a batch PCTC order from the relevant Korean owner. So far, CSSC shipyards have held 17 orders from South Korean shipowners, covering 210,000-ton dual-fuel powered bulk carriers, multi-purpose heavy crane ships, 7,000CEU and 8,600CEU carriers.

In the global new ship market, the competition between Chinese and South Korean ship companies has long been “white-hot". Especially in the popular large LNG carriers, dual-fuel container ships, automobile carriers and other markets in recent years, the competition between the two countries is quite "anxious". In this context, with its independent research and development, design, manufacturing, equipment supply and full cycle service capabilities, CSSC has repeatedly won orders from the "backyard" of Korean shipbuilding companies, which will undoubtedly attract more attention from the industry.

Spark demand with hull form design

It is worth noting that hull forms of orders obtained by CSSC from South Korea in recent years are basically independently designed by CSSC research institutes. For example, the new generation of environmentfriendly multi-purpose high-end heavy crane vessel undertaken by Huangpu Wenchong is independently developed by the CSSC Shanghai Shipbuilding Design and Research Institute (SDARI).With its flexible loading capacity, spacious deck loading area and superior environment-friendly and economic performance, this ship has attracted the favor of many shipowners including South Korea and Europe once put on the market.

At present, the overall aging phenomenon of the global multipurpose fleet is prominent. Thanks to the global boom in offshore wind power construction and the diversification of shipping companies, the current market demand for heavy crane ships, especially those with a single lifting capacity of more than 150 tons, continues to grow. It is based on the keen capture of this market trend that the SDARI designed the world's leading 38,000 ton multi-purpose heavy crane ship for HMM's personalized demands, which paved the way for CSSC taking the orders.

In fact, the keen judgment of the ship market is not "born", but gradually fostered by the relevant technical R&D personnel in the long-term practice process through continuous accumulation, continuous learning, and continuous communication with the shipower. "More than ten years ago, the institute began to lay out PCTC. At that time, the standards were set by Japanese enterprises. We followed all the way for so many years, did a good job in technical reserve and tracking, and gradually established our own technical standards and talent team." SDARI related technical personnel disclosed to reporters that technical personnel of Nippon Mail Corporation adimired deeply SDARI design drawings refinement degree during commuication, and it is because of the attention of the design details that enables SDARI to have helped Chinese shipbuilding companies won the PCTC orders from Japan and South Korea.

At present, the institute has successfully developed and designed a number of new vehicle carriers such as 7000CEU, 7800CEU, 8600CEU.At the same time, it has also launched the world's largest 9400CEU dual-fuel powered PCTC with fully independent intellectual property rights, and China's first 7000CEU ammonia fuel powered PCTC. The global market share of the handheld PCTC orders is more than 70%, and PCTC designed by the institute has almost become the "first choice" for shipowners in the global new ship market.

Impress ship owners with marketing services

As the main platform and main channel of CSSC, CSTC has also played an important role in the process of winning orders from South Korea.According to a CSTC source, with the help of the good relationship established by the two sides in the process of 8600CEU PCTC signing negotiations, CSTC took the initiative, through the return visit exchange, learned that HMM also has new demand for multi-purpose ships.

HMM is a world-renowned shipping company, and its container ship capacity is among the best among the world's major liner companies. However, the company has also been expanding its special carrier fleet, with the 38,000-ton multi-purpose ship commissioned for the first time.

After a comprehensive understanding of the relevant information, CSTC, under the overall planning of the CSSC Marine Service, has set up a special project team composed of relevant personnel in the design, construction and operation.According to the demand of HMM and the new trend of the market, on the one hand, they coordinated the design institute to tackle hull form design; on the other hand, they rolled out special planning for the building scheme relying on stellar performance of Huangpu Wenchong in the field of special ship construction.

Meantime, CSTC gave full play to their own advantages, adopted "one to one" business strategy, timely grasped the dynamic demand of the shipowner, set up the bridge communication between the shipowner and design institute and the shipyard, transformed design effort, shipyard strength and management power into resultant force, won the order with twice the result with half the effort. The related scheme won favor of the South Korean owner at first sight. Finally, CSSC won at one stroke in the South Korean market.

It is an important responsibility of CSTC to assess the situation and take rapid action to explore new markets. With its outstanding performance in many business negotiations with Korean shipowners, the comprehensive strength of CSSC has been widely recognized in the Korean industry. It is expected that, relying on its own strength in all kinds of high-end hull form R&D,design, construction, equipment supply facilities and business services, CSSC will continue to meet the diversified needs of global ship owners through innovative R&D, and create more star ships which trigger Bravo and a large audience.
