Poetryisthe secret story, the story behind the story—or, as Wordsworth puts it, what is“felt in the blood and felt along the heart.”Even though most Americans today don’t acknowledge the art form all that much, no person doesn’t respect or—if only from a distance—admire the magic in it.

Around this time of year, I always think of William Faulkner. Here’s why: For all of his achievements, his Nobel Prize for Literature, his Pulitzers and National Book Awards, his face on a 22-cent postage stamp—the man still fell short. And it wasn’t that he dropped out of high school and did only a few semesters of college, or that he was once fired by an employer for reading on the job. These were small missteps and shortcomings that were not to blame in the long run. The larger issue is that, in his own view, William Faulkner was a failed poet.

“Maybe every novelist wants to write poetry first,”he said in 1956,“finds he can’t, and then tries the short story, which is the most demanding form after poetry. And, failing at that, only then does he take up novel writing.”

The world of letters is filled with writers who started out as poets and went a different direction later on in their careers. Hans Christian Andersen, immortal for stories like“The Little Mermaid”and“The Ugly Duck原ling,”only turned to fairy tales after failing as a poet and playwright(劇作家). The late Chilean writer Roberto Bolano too began as a poet. The difference between Bolano and Faulkner, however, is that Bolano was actually pretty good at it. His reasons for taking up fiction were monetary: With a family to support, Bolano believed he could earn more by writing novels and short stories, a decision that proved to be wise and true. But he always saw poetry as superior. Once, when asked,“What makes you believe you’re a better poet than a novelist?”Bolano answered,“The poetry makes me blush(脸红)less.”

24.What is poetry like in Wordsworth’s mind?

A.It tells stories after stories.

B.It has a power to excite people.

C.It is not much highly thought of.

D.It encourages us to follow the heart.

25.Why does the author mention William Faulkner?

A.To prove Faulkner was into reading.

B.To stress poem writing is never easy.

C.To indicate Faulkner enjoys a high status.

D.To show celebrities are not always well-behaved.

26.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Hans Christian Andersen was better-known as a playwright.

B.Poetry is the most demanding form of writing for all writers.

C.Roberto Bolano took up novel writing after failing as a poet.

D.Most writers showed their admiration to the magic of poetry.

27.Which section is the text most likely from?

A. Arts and design.

B. Author interviews.

C. Science and technology.

D. Book news and features.

C

Canadian-Iranian designer Roya Aghighi wants you to imagine that your shirt is alive. Far from dreaming up a horror movie plot, she hopes we can develop a closer relationship with fashion—by treating clothes as living beings that need our help to survive.

Working with a group of scientists at the University of British Columbia(UBC), she has invented a living, biodegradable fabric named Biogarmentry. Made from algae, the bio-fabricated garment photosynthesizes(起光合作用), which purifies the air around it.

Fashion is one of the world’s most polluting industries. It’s responsible for more carbon emissions than international flights and shipping combined, amounting to 10% of all greenhouse gasses on a global basis. US consumers are buying more garments than ever, wearing each item fewer times and sending almost 70% of the clothes and footwear produced each year to landfill, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. Changing our relationship with clothing, from one of neglectful fast-fashion consumption to a caring connection, is one of Aghighi’s main drivers.

In recent years, environmental startups have proposed a number of alternative natural fibers. Many of these have the potential to sequester carbon but none have been shown to achieve net-zero emissions over the lifecycle of a garment, especially when washing and drying clothes significantly add to their overall footprint. Instead, so-called“carbon-negative”brands turn to carbon offsetting(補偿)—planting trees—to bring their net emissions down.

So far, while Aghighi’s innovative garment is now only at the proof-of-concept stage and consumption habits will take a long time to change, buyers may one day be instructed to stretch the fabric out in front of a window before putting it on. With sunlight and a spray of water, its single-cell algae come to life.

28.What is special about the clothes designed by Roya Aghighi?

A.They help us live a long life.

B.They are made of living materials.

C.They last long and are fashionable.

D.They are inspired by horror movie plots.

29.What is Roya Aghighi’s major concern in her fashion design?

A.Achieving low carbon footprint.

B.Changing people’s spending habits.

C.Extending the lifecycle of a garment.

D.Encouraging fast-fashion consumption.

30.What does the underlined word“sequester”in Paragraph 4 mean?

A.Trap.

B. Fuel.

C. Release.

D. Increase.

31.What can be inferred about Aghighi’s garment from the last paragraph?

A.It will soon come onto the market.

B.It shows some promise to our future.

C.It may increase buyers’daily expenses.

D.It needs to be worn carefully as instructed.

Plastic makes great food packaging. It’s waterproof and flexible. And best of all, it is unaffected by all known bacteria—until now. Researchers have found a new bacterium called Ideonella sakaiensis, growing in some plastic pieces around a recycling plant that can feed off a common type of plastic used in clothing, plastic bottles and food packaging.

Most plastics are difficult items for microbes(微生物)because plastics are large chains of repeating molecules called polymers(聚合物). The entire chain is far larger than the individual microbe.“So the organism can’t take it inside the cell to digest it,”says John Coates, a microbiologist at the University of California, Berkeley. Imagine a baby trying to eat an enormous pizza from the middle. It can’t do it. The pie is too big. But“the polymer eater,”has two enzymes(酶)that can break the plastic polymer into smaller pieces. In other words, the baby gets a pizza cutter. The bacterium can then take the pieces and eat them, eventually converting the plastic into carbon dioxide and water.

It would be great if we could culture the bacteria, spray landfills down with them and let them deal with our mountains of plastic refuse. But that may never happen.“It grows very fast,”a researcher explains,“because it eats very slowly.”But with more research, Coates thinks that the bacterium might be engineered for such a purpose.“It’s certainly a move in the right direction. Having an organism that seems to be capable of biodegrading these components directly will help us develop a bio-repairing technology,”he says.

That doesn’t mean we’ll ever be able to handle our plastic without care. Recycling will likely remain a better option anyway, Coates adds.“Environmentally, I would prefer recycling if it can work effectively,”he says. Biodegrading materials still releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which would contribute to global warming. But in cases where recycling is not practical, he says, maybe this little bacterium could one day prove a useful alternative.

32. According to researchers, what’s the value of the newly-found bacterium?

A. It makes food packaging easy.

B. It can get plastic bottles recycled.

C. It breaks down certain plastic materials.

D. It helps plastic bottles waterproof and flexible.

33. Why does the author mention a baby trying to eat pizza?

A. To highlight some similarity.

B. To help develop a new theme.

C. To introduce a great experience.

D. To show a measure of disapproval.

34. What can we expect of the bacterium in the future?

A. It will cut global warming gases.

B. It could take the place of recycling.

C. It might help deal with plastic refuse.

D. It allows us to handle plastic casually.

35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. Can we handle our plastic without care one day?

B. How do we live with mountains of plastic waste?

C. Could plastic-eating bacteria help deal with waste?

D. How is a bacterium engineered for a recycling purpose?

第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

I have become the type of person that used to mystify me—a fitness enthusiast.36 .

So what changed? For starters, I reframed what I thought of as exercise.“The research does now show that basically all movement counts.37,”says Michelle Segar, a psychologist and director of the University of Michigan Sport, Health and Activity Research and Policy Center.“I’ve been astonished that even up until today, very educated people don’t know—don’t believe—that walking actually‘counts’as good exercise,”she says.

38 . I used to think if I wasn’t sweaty or out of breath for at least a half-hour straight, why bother? But so much more counts as moderate exercise, science now tells us. According to a scientific resource called the Compendium of Physical Activities(體力活动纲要), which uses a value called a MET, or metabolic equivalent(代谢当量). To count as moderately intense exercise, the magic number you want to hit is between 3 and 6 METS. 39 . Climb the stairs slowly and that’s 4 METs. Climb them quickly and it’s nearly 9 METS, which means you’re burning nearly nine times as many calories as you would just sitting.

Knowing this really changed the way I think about exercise. I started with small bursts of movement throughout my day. Instead of sending an email to a co-worker, I’d walk over and talk to them.40 . The more I did, the stronger I felt—and the more I wanted to do.

For me, exercise has become a bodily need. I just don’t feel right without it.

A.And anything is better than nothing

B.That was a big embarrassment for me

C.Remember, that’s just what’s kept me going

D.Just sitting, doing nothing, is a MET value of 1

E.Fortunately, lots of regular activities meet the magic mark

F.That was certainly not the case a year and a half ago, however

G.I’d do one-on-one meetings with co-workers while walking and talking
