Abstract: The American Pulitzer winner and Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey takes African American history writing as her major literary concern, the main strategy of which is the historicization of individual narratives. This article focuses on the individual narratives in her poetry and studies the techniques she employs for the historicization of these narratives so as to detect the social and cultural implications of this literary practice. It is held that Tretheweys historicization is carried out from perspectives of narrator arrangement, cross-media narration and poetic prosody, the targets of which are the reclamation of African American individuals and communitys rights to tell histories and the restoration of historical and social power for them as “psychological exiles” on American land.

Key words: individual narratives; historicization; “psychological exiles”; historical and social power restoration
