The Forbidden City， lying in the right center of Beijing City， had witnessed drastic historical changes in the past 600 years. From the royal palace， to the museum for the people， it has new missions in a new role. As the time striding ahead， as the most high-profile museum in China， the Palace Museum is trying to fit its new role and conquer new challenges. Starting from 2012， when the new Curator arrived at the Museum， a series of reforms had opened the curtain of the once mysterious Palace Museum. Year after year， the Museum held elaborately planned exhibitions， counted the amount of treasures as precise as to the single-digit level， limited the number of tourists per day， and fully utilized its cultural advantages and became the new Internet Celebrity.

作为明清两朝的皇家宫苑，故宫在中国的地位可谓得天独厚。然而，在很长一段时间内，故宫给人的印象总是“高高在上”“不接地气”。既有国家的帮扶补助，又有天下游客朝圣般的“觐见”，故宫好像不需要为自己的未来发愁，只是高傲地矗立在那，等着人们的瞻仰与称颂。

没有好看的展览，没有与观众的交流活动，甚至没有值得刷的话题……这样的故宫无疑是在浪费其天生的“网红”潜质与数量庞大的庋藏。不仅如此，“恃宠而骄”的故宫还越来越不像话了。

2011年，故宫深陷“十重门”，成了文博界当年最大的笑话。展品离奇失窃，锦旗出现错字，改建私人会所，损坏珍贵文物，秘而不宣瞒报……这是故宫长期疏于管理的一次事故的集中爆发，而这些让人痛心疾首或啼笑皆非的事件，反而促成了故宫的深度自查和转型。

2012年初，时任国家文物局局长单霁翔临危受命，调任故宫博物院院长。上任后，单霁翔对故宫博物院从上至下、从规划到细节都进行了大刀阔斧的改革。此前，故宫几乎70%的区域都竖着“非开放区，观众止步”的牌子；此后，故宫的开放面积逐年增加，超过80%的地方都对游人开放。此前，故宫90%的藏品都沉睡在库房里，不见天日；
