When I began my career as a jazz singer, I was told to start by covering the standards. But I didnt follow the path most new jazz artists take and produced original albums instead. I believe when you have something to say, you cant really keep it down.

Two of those original albums, Liquid Spirit and Take Me To The Alley, earned me a loyal fan base and two Grammys for best jazz album in 2014 and 2017 respectively.

My idol is Nat King Cole, whose music has an important place in our household. I could smell the greens on the stove and the cornbread in the oven when I hear Nats music. I wanted to have his music come through my body and sing it as an expression of appreciation for him. My mother had always been a fan of his music. This is something I did one day: Imagine her coming home from some protest movement or march and putting on, “Smile though your heart is aching, smile even though its breaking.” Imagine her putting on, “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again.” I see the optimism and the strength in his music.

Writing from a personal experience can bring about my feelings and power of feelings that can be instantly connected to the instrument and my voice. When I sing Mothers Song, Insanity, even Holding On, I am expressing things I have a connection to.

The song Holding On is a soul song. It connects to Nat King Cole with its optimism, the optimism about the power and the strength of love. I like the fact that I can have 17 to 25-year-olds all over the world jumping and dancing to this song. Theyre still getting the message.

24. How did the writer start his career as a musician?

A. By copying his idol.

B. By singing for awards.

C. By covering the standards.

D. By creating original music.

25. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A. The writers childhood experience.

B. Nat King Coles contribution to jazz.

C. The writers mother in the protest movement.

D. Nat King Coles influence on the writer and his family.

26. What does the writer mainly express in his songs?

A. His personal emotions.

B. His strong love for jazz.

C. His attitude toward social injustice.

D. His memories of the good old days.

27. What conclusion can be drawn from the text?

A. The dream of the writers mother has come true.

B. The writers music is influencing young people.

C. Nat King Coles jazz music is highly valued by all.

D. Optimism is the soul of the writers original songs.

Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events—love, sadness, good times, and bad times. It tells real-life stories and sounds the way people really talk. As life becomes more complicated (復杂), it is good to hear music about ordinary people.

Country music, sometimes called country-western, comes from two kinds of music. One is the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern Unite States. The other is traditional cowboy music from the west. The singers usually play the guitars, and in the 1920s they started using electric guitars. At first city people said country music was low class. It was popular mostly in the south. But during World War II, thousands of southerners went to the northeast and midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them. Soldiers from the rest of the country went to army camps in the south. They learned country music. Slowly it became popular all over the country.

Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada—in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. About 1,200 radio stations broadcast country music twenty-four hours a day. English stars sing it in British English, and people in other countries sing it in their own languages. The music that started with cowboys and poor southerners is now popular all over the world.

第二節 阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live?

We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle.  Mental exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about.  If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.

According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “  ”

A. It needs exercise.

B. You are such a smart child.

C. What people want to express is like this.

D. A healthy body contributes to ones intelligence.

E. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and

intelligent.

F. Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children.

G. These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.
