摘 要 中国现代大学制度萌芽于晚清时期，一开始完全仿照他国模式，从学习日本、美国到模仿苏联，经历了一系列的变化，从不同方面对确立我国现代大学制度进行了探索，积累了经验。本研究对“现代大学”一词的内涵进行分析，描述了中国现代大学制度的发展变化，发现最终还是要回归国情，走自己的高等教育发展道路。

Abstract China's modern university system sprouted in the late Qing Dynasty. At first， it was completely modeled on the model of other countries. From studying Japan and the United States to mimicking the Soviet Union， it has undergone a series of changes. We have explored the establishment of a modern university system in China from different aspects and accumulated experience. This study analyzes the meaning of the term "modern university"， describes the development and changes of the modern university system in China， and it is necessary to return to the national conditions and take the path of development of higher education.

“現代性”在西方社会孕育发展，促进了西方大学从古典形态向现代性形态转变。西方现代大学制度作为一种普适性的知识生产模式被引入到非西方国家中，成为这些国家高等教育转型的重要条件。受“现代化”风潮的影响，我国的现代高等教育制度萌芽于晚清时期，经过一系列变革与发展，终于建立起较为完备的现代大学制度体系。

1 “现代大学”词义的源流与演变

我国现代大学源起于西方，西方现代大学是从欧洲中世纪大学逐渐演化而来。西方的现代大学是相对于中世纪传统大学而言的。早期大学用“Studium generale”一词表示，指的是面向整个基督教世界的、不同于地方性学校的特殊学校。大学（University）一词源于拉丁文Univetsitas，最初是一种行业组织，具有行会性质。到12至14世纪时，在Universitas中任职的教师被称为master，他们传授的是已有知识，与手工业中的师傅、工厂的领导并无不同。①他们通过从事教学这种职业来谋生，也自己组织法团。因此，大学最初的含义就是一种行会，是为争取特许状（即法律地位）及学术活动自由而组织起来的中世纪学者行会组织。……
