By John Berryman

( ... rabid1 or dog-dull.) Let me tell you how

The Eighteenth Century couplet2 ended. Now

Tell me. Troll3 me the sources of that Song—

Assigned last week—by Blake4. Come, come along,

Gentlemen. (Fidget and huddle, do. Squint soon.5)

I want to end these fellows all by noon.

‘That deep romantic chasm—an early use;

The word is from the French, by our abuse

Fished out6 a bit. (Red all your eyes. O when?)

‘A poet is a man speaking to men7:

But I am then a poet, am I not?—

Ha ha. The radiator8, please. Well, what?

Alive now—no—Blake would have written prose,

But movement following movement crisply flows,

So much the better, better the much so,

As burbleth9 Mozart. Twelve. The class can go.

Until I meet you, then, in Upper Hell10

Convulsed11, foaming immortal blood: farewell.

“那悬崖深谷”——早先是这么用;

3. troll:

4. William Blake:

8. radiator:

(Good is the passive that obeys Reason. Evil is the active spring from Energy. Good is Heaven. Evil is Hell.)
