A baby carrier is like a backpack for carrying a baby. Ann Moore introduced the idea of a baby carrier to American people nearly 50 years ago.
Ann spent two years in Africa in the early 1960s. She worked as a nurse there. Ann saw babies wrapped in bright cloth tied to their mothers backs. The babies snuggled (依偎) close to their mothers, and the mothers could use their hands to do other things.
In 1964, Ann had her own baby. She tried making a carrier like the one African mothers used. The carrier was like a backpack. Everywhere Ann went with her baby in the carrier, people asked, “Where can I buy one?” In 1965, Ann and her mother began to sell handmade carriers. Ann received a patent for the baby carrier in 1969. By that time, the baby carrier had leg holes and straps that could be made longer or shorter. It could also be worn on the back or front.
By 1979, the baby carriers were made in a factory. These baby carriers cost less to make and more than 25,000 were sold every month.
When Ann made her first baby carrier, she just wanted to keep her baby close and still have her hands free to do others things. Now all over the world babies ride in baby carriers, close to their parents, safe and happy.

Perhaps the most famous name in the world of silent movies is Charlie Chaplin. It may seem a little bit lucky since both moving pictures and Charlie Chaplin were born in the same year, 1889. Sadly, Charlies father died when Charlie was only five years old, and his mother was sent to a mental hospital (精神病院). This left young Charlie homeless and living on the streets.
Things seemed bad for Charlie, but he had a bright, likeable personality (个性) and tried to get small parts in performance (演出) around London. Then in 1906, his life took a major change. He got a part in a show performing in the United States. Seven years later, he got his first major part in a film.
Charlie was a quick success in the movie theaters. His silent, highly popular form of comedy (喜剧) was perfect for the silent films of the time. In 1915, he could make $1,259 a week, which was a huge amount(数量) of money at that time. Charlie knew what he was good at, and held on to it. Even when sound movies became popular in 1923, he continued to make silent pictures. Charlie knew that the silence was a great part of what made his movies so funny. Charlie did not stop making silent films until well into the 1940s, when almost everyone else had changed to sound movies. However, Charlie was still one of the worlds greatest film stars.
