委婉是英语中一种重要的修辞手段，其中有一种特殊的委婉手段就是专门用来表示委婉的否定意义。 也就是说直接由not,no,never 等词构成的否定句有时会显得唐突和生硬，不易为人接受，因此就需要用一些方法，把直截了当的否定变得含蓄些，把不悦耳的句子变得委婉一些；这就是我们这里要讨论的委婉否定（Mild Negation），表示委婉否定的方法也很多，常用的大致有下面这些：

1 通过增加某些词或短语的方法

1.1 增加please 或附加疑问句。 如：

（1）No noise ,please. 请别吵。

（2）Please don’t speak Chinese. 请别说汉语。

（3）You can’t run 100 metres in 15 seconds,can you? 你不可能在15 秒内跑完100 米，对吗？

（4）Don’t take it seriously, would you? 别那么认真，好吗？

1.2 用“I don’t think (suppose) + 肯定句”

（1）I don’t think this book is well written.(比较：this book is not well written)我认为这本书写得不好。

（2）I don’t suppose she can pass the examination.（比较：she can’t pass the examination.）我猜想她考试可能不会及格。

（3）I ‘m not sure Xiao Li is competent for the job.（比较：Xiao Li is not competent for the job.）我不敢肯定小李能胜任此工作。

试比较以下三个例句：

（5）He is a foolish man .他是一个傻瓜。

（6）He is not clever.（比较委婉）他不聪明。

（7）I don’t think he is clever.（更委婉）我认为他不聪明。

1.3 I’m afraid 与否定句配合使用。 如：

（1）I’afraid I can’t help you.恐怕我帮不了你。

（2）This plan doesn’t suit him, I’m afraid. 恐怕这个计划不适合他。

有时可用I’m afraid not 这种简略来表示委婉否定。 如：

（3）——Can you lend me two hundred yuan?

——I’m afraid not( 比No,I can’t 委婉)

——您能借我二百块钱吗？

——恐怕不能。

1.4 在否定句中加入某些副词

某些副词如too,much ,quite,really,particularly 加在否定句中也能使否定语气更加委婉。 如：

（1）Some comrades are not too diligent.

有些同志不太用功。

（2）——There’s a basketball match this evening, would you like to go with me ?

——sorry,I don’t care much for basketball.

——今晚有一场篮球赛，你要跟我一起去吗？

——对不起，我对篮球不很喜欢。

（3）I’m not quite satisfied with the result. 对这个结果我不十分满意。

（4）I don’t really like her articles.我不太喜欢她的文章。

（5）——What do you think of the film?

——Not bad, but I don’t particularly care for its music.

——你认为这部电影怎么样？

——还可以，但我不太喜欢它的音乐。

1.5 在否定句中加上某些属于个人意见的副词或介词短语

英语中有些表示个人意见的副词或介词短语， 如personally, from what I understood, in my opinion 等作为状语添加在否定句上也可以使得全句的否定显得更委婉。 如：

（1）Personally I don’t care for that park. 就我个人观点而言，我不喜欢那个公园。 (该句比I don’t care for that park.更为委婉)

（2）From what I understand, this word doesn’t mean “ease”.据我所知，这个单词并不是“容易”、“轻松”的意思。

2 采用某些特殊结构

英语中还有下面几种特殊结构可用来表示委婉否定：

2.1 had better not 或be better not to

试比较以下几句：

（1）Don’t take a bath today.(表示命令，否定语气很强)

今天不许洗澡。

（2）You’d better not take a bath today.(表示劝告，较为委婉)

今天最好不要去洗澡。

（3）It would be better not to take a bath today.(很客气的建议，更为委婉)今天还是不去洗澡更好。

2.2 be not supposed to ,don’t want to 和let’s not

有时否定式祈使句转化成be not supposed to 和let’s not 或don’t want to 结构也可以构成委婉否定，试比较：

（1）a. Don’t swim in the morning.不要在晚上游泳。

b. You don’t want to swim in the evening. 你不会想在晚上游泳吧。

（2）a .Don’t smoke in the reading room.不许在阅览室吸烟。

b.You aren’t supposed to smoke in the reading room.

在阅览室里不能抽烟。

3 通过其他语法手段

此外，还有以下这些语法手段也可以构成委婉否定：

3.1 给否定式的祈使句添加主题

给否定式的祈使句添加主语也可使句子婉转一些，如：

（1）a. Don’t stand up.

b. You don’t stand up.

不许站起来。

（2）a. Don’t go to his house.

b.You don’t go to his house.

你别到他家去。

3.2 采用过去时代替现在时

使用一般过去时代替一般现在时，过去进行时代替现在进行时也会使否定句的语气较为委婉，试比较：

（1）a. I can’t give you any more.( 一般否定)

我不能再给你了。

b.I couldn’t give you any more.(委婉否定)

（2）a,You are not behaving well.(一般否定)

你表现不好。

b.You were not behaving well.(委婉否定)

你表现不好。

4 通过否定转换法

与强调否定的表示法相似， 委婉否定也可以通过一些形式来表示，这也是一种否定转换法。 就是说，某些肯定形式可以表示否定意义，而且是委婉否定的意义。 如：

（1）a. Don’t speak loudly.不许大声说话。

b. Please keep your voice down.请小声点说话。

（2）a.Don’t move forward.不许向前。

b.You are supposed to stop.你应该停步。

（3）a.I can’t do that.我无法干那件事。

b.That is more than I can do.
