Burt Wolf （Host）： The places where people come together are divided by 1）sociologists into three categories. The first is your home， the second is the place where you work， and the third is a neighbourhood hangout， where people from the area come to talk， to reduce the stress of daily life and to be together with other people. In Ireland， the third group is made up primarily of “public houses，” commonly known as “pubs.” Very often the local pub is a 2）focal point in the community， the 3）secular 4）counterbalance to the church. Of course the spirit one confronts in the pub is considerably different from the spirit you find in a church， but the sense of group can be similar.

Paul OToole （Guide）： Were in a street of pubs now…

Burt： We started in the Temple Bar district， which is a maze of narrow winding streets that run up from the bank of the Liffey River. The objective of our meandering is The 5）Auld Dubliner. It is famous for its music.

Paul： Auld Dubliner is a true Dublin pub. Even though it has moved with the times and its updated， and its probably a little bit bigger than it was， its held true to its spirit and its soul. Weve been listening to some fantastic music， and that really is the essence of what its about.

As you walk into the 6）Stags Head， youre gonna see it looks a little bit different than The Auld Dubliner.

Burt： We ended our tour at The Stags Head. It was opened in 1770 and 7）refurbished in 1895. Its a perfect example of a Victorian pub.

Paul： The Stags Head is， I suppose， its a true Dublin pub， as with The Auld Dubliner， but its slightly different. You dont get music at this pub. This pub is very much about the engagement of people. Its held true to its style， and if you look around the pub， you can see that a lot of furniture is old. Its authentic， its how it was， and its a pub known and cherished and loved by Dubliners for many， many years， and our visitors enjoy it too.

Pubs are at the heart of where Irish people like to meet most， at heart…we are very 8）garrulous people， were 9）convivial people， were talkative people， but we like to do that in an environment where were comfortable， and the pub is that environment. Its a place where we come and share stories， where we meet friends. We know that， if we go to a pub where were known， we can go on our own， and instantly be welcome. Its a place of warmth， of music， of humour， of tales and exaggerated tales， its all of those things.
