高考对whether与if的用法考查经常出现，两个词的用法虽然非常相似，但也有细微差别，如果稍有不慎，就会导致错误的出现，并且这种错误还较为隐蔽，不容易被发现。因此同学们在使用这两个词时，一定要小心谨慎，力避错误的出现。

一、if的用法

1.表示条件，可译为“如果”，引导一个条件状语从句。注意，如果if引导的条件状语从句表达将来概念，从句一般用现在时，主句用将来时。如：

If weather permits，I'll go to visit my teacher.

如果天气允许，我将去拜访我的老师。

2.表示假设，可译为“假如，要是”，引导一个假设条件句。如：

If I were you，I would not go.

假如我是你，我就不去。

3.表示“是否”，引导一个宾语从句。如：

I wonder if it is the right size.

我不知道尺寸是否合适。

二、whether与if用法的区别

1.whether不能用于if的前两种用法。whether引导宾语从句时可以与if换用，但要注意以下几种情形。

（1）在宾语从句中可用whether or not或whether…or not，也可用if…or not（多用于口语），但不能用if ornot的形式，也就是说if和or not可以分开使用，但不能放在一起使用。如：

I dont know whether she will come or not.（正）

I dont know whether or not she will come.（正）

I dont know if she will come or not.（正）

I dont know if or not she will come.（误）

（2）whether引导的宾语从句可以移到句首，if引导的宾语从句则不行。如：

Whether this is true or not，I cant say.（正）

If this is true or not，I cant say.（误）

（3）介词后面的宾语从句只能用whether引导，不能用if引导。如：

Im not interested in whether you'll come or not.

我对你是否要来不感兴趣。

（4）在discuss，decide等动词后面通常只跟whether引导的宾语从句，不跟if引导的宾语从句。如：

We'll discuss whether we will go to Kunming for aholiday.

我们将讨论是否去昆明度假。

Let's first decide whether we will hold a meeting.

我们先决定一下是否要召开一个会议。

（5）在句意上可能产生歧义时最好不用if，而用whether。如：

Let me know whether you are coming.

告诉我你是否来。

Let me know if you are coming.

告诉我你是否来。（或：如果你要来，请通知我。）

2.在动词不定式前面只能用whether，不能用if。如：

The teacher will tell us whether to have a classmeeting this Saturday afternoon.

老师将告诉我们这个星期六下午是否开班会。

3.引导主语从句、宾语从句或同位语从句时，只能用whether，不能用if。……
