Dear Readers,

Have you ever met anyone who didn't like brick? To our great relief, we at Wienerberger, the world's largest producer of bricks, haven't yet! Again and again, surveys reveal brick to be the most popular choice. No wonder: fired clay is not only one of mankind's oldest building materials, it's also still the best and the most sustainable. Don't just take our word for it; that's also the view of renowned architects such as Pritzker Prize winner and Brick Award Jury member Wang Shu. Brick graces great architecture and functional buildings, roof landscapes and historic squares, and it lends whole towns their unmistakable identity.

Despite the countless creative design possibilities and its excellent energy efficiency brick it is still sometimes overlooked in "modern" architecture. That's why we initiated the Wienerberger Brick Award and accompanying biannual architecture book in 2004, in order to promote the aesthetic and functional assets that facing bricks, clay blocks and roof tiles have to offer for contemporary architecture.

It was and is our aim to show that brick is a modern and incredibly versatile construction material. At the same time, we want to give people who are interested in architecture, as well as experts, an overview of current developments and trends in international brick architecture with its remarkable range of applications. Even we, who work with brick on a daily basis, are continually surprised and fascinated by the immense planning and manual dexterity with which many buildings are executed to reflect and meet regional architectural requirements.

In 2014 we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Wienerberger Brick Award and meanwhile we know that our award has achieved a certain reputation within the architecture world. Submissions have grown steadily since 2004, and we are constantly receiving requests asking how to take part in the competition. International architecture critics and journalists have proposed more than 300 projects from 26 countries for the Brick Award 2014, from Spain to Afghanistan, to China and Thailand. All of them illustrate that brick as a sustainable building material is not only used for façades, walls, roofs or paving, but rather decisively characterises future-oriented, energy-efficient and, above all, modern architecture.

One of the winners of this year's Brick Award is a project located in China: The House for All Seasons constructed by John Lin was victorious in the Residential Use category. Another two Chinese projects were nominated: Lanxi Curtilage and Tongjiang Recycled Brick School. This shows the high creative standards of architectural work in China and its sustainable approach. In my opinion, the combination of local traditions with modern architecture is very inspiring as it is exemplary for building with clay building materials.

For us, the Wienerberger Brick Award as an international exchange of ideas on the brick architecture of the future, is a success story that began in 2004 and we definitely will continue this story in two years.

I already look forward to seeing next brick buildings from China enter the running for the Wienerberger Brick Award 16. (www. wienerberger.com)
