So theres this girl at school. Ive had the biggest crush on her for years. The only thing that excites me about going to school—the only thing I look forward to—is knowing that Im going to see her in class. Shes beautiful, a real looker, but shes also smart as a whip. I really look up to her and admire her. And shes just so nice! Shes always taking care of the weaker students and looking after them. Everyone looks to her for advice because they know shes always willing to help. She says she wants to be a teacher some day, and she really looks the part because shes got small-framed glasses and wears her hair short, kind of like Michelle Pfeiffer in Dangerous Minds. Shes practically a Michelle Pfeiffer look alike!

The only problem? Shes got a boyfriend and hes a real jerk. Hes the kind of guy who only ever looks out for number one—himself! My friend said that maybe he was a jerk in public and really nice in private, but I told him if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, its probably a duck, and that Id trust my own judgment. The guy seems so cold and unfeeling—he looks as if butter wouldnt melt in his mouth. And hes always disrespecting her and looking down on her; it just makes me so mad that hed look a gift horse in the mouth and be so ungrateful. I wish shed take a long, hard look at him and realize how horrible he is.

But then guess what happened yesterday? Youll never believe it! I was looking for my favourite pen and Id been searching for a long time. Id looked high and low, just about everywhere, but there were so many places I could have lost it that it was like looking for a needle in a haystack—hopeless! Then, in walks my girl looking like a million bucks. I mean, shes always pretty, but today she was gorgeous—she looked fit to kill. She asked me what was going on and I told her that Id just given up the search for my pen, but she was having none of it. “Look sharp!” she yelled at me. “Were going to find that pen!”

So were searching and searching. Then, in walks her boyfriend and he gives her a look. I mean, he was really looking daggers at her. He walks over and tells her that she looks like something the cat dragged in. I couldnt believe hed tell such a beautiful girl that she looked terrible! And, I guess, neither could she. She stood up, looked him in the eye without fear or shame, and said, “Look whos talking. Youre not looking so great yourself.”It was unbelievable! Id never seen her stand up for herself to him before. He stormed out and she just sat there looking like the cat that swallowed the canary. She seemed so pleased with herself. I looked questioningly at her and she told me theyd broken up that morning. “Look on the bright side,” I said. “Now I can ask you out.” But she just laughed.
