up to ones neck: deeply involved in sth.(深陷入,忙于)。例如:

Jo: Wow, its been that long since I had the surgery?

Mark: Yeah, sorry I didnt come and visit. ①I was up to my neck in work.

Jo: Thats okay, since I got back home Ive only seen a few friends and family anyway.

Mark: What exactly was it that you went in for?

Jo: I had my nose 1)straightened; my eyelids made double; my chin shortened, and my ears 2)pinned back…and some 3)liposuction.

Mark: Wow, the full works!

Jo: ②Yeah, there was no holding back.

Mark: Yeah, so how do you feel? How do you look?

Jo: Well a little sore obviously.

Mark: Yeah silly question I guess. But are you like a totally different person?

Jo: Well, only on the outside. Im still the same old Jo on the inside.

Mark: But thats why you wanted it done, to change your appearance.

Jo: I guess so.

Mark: You dont sound too sure now that the deed has been done.

Jo: Well, I only took the bandages off last week but Ive had mixed responses.

Mark: Like what?

Jo: Some of my girl friends think it looks great!

Mark: Oh yeah?

Jo: Yeah, they say I look the same as the girls on the magazine covers!

Mark: Thats kind of great?!

Jo: Yeah!

Mark: And what about your relatives?

Jo: Actually most of them arent sure.

Mark: Why, what have they said?

Jo: They said that its my little imperfections that made me unique and special.

Mark: ③Yeah, well, there are two sides to every coin.

Jo: On the one hand, I get more attention from boys now, but on the other hand, I feel like Ive lost a little part of myself.

④ Thats basically what I was getting at. 这就是我想说的。

get at: try to make understandable; hint or suggest(试图说明)。例如:

Sorry, I dont understand. What exactly are you getting at?

⑤ In any case, I cant do anything about it now! 总之,我现在已经不能改变什么了!

in any case: used to emphasize the upcoming statement(无论如何,总之)。例如:

Maybe you dont like the new girl. In any case, she is here to stay.

可能你不喜欢那个新来的女孩子。但不管怎么说,她就留在这儿了。

Mark: Its like what your friends said before.

Jo: Whats that?

Mark: They said you look the same as the girls in the magazines.

Jo: I think they meant that as a compliment. They are always talking about how gorgeous and 4)stunning those cover girls are! But, I see what you mean.

Mark: Yeah, Im sure it was a compliment!

Jo: But I see what youre saying. That I look less individual and more like those fashion girls.

Mark: ④Thats basically what I was getting at. How do you feel though?

Jo: I feel happier about getting rid of those bits of my body I didnt like but…

Mark: But what?

Jo: Well,I miss them a little.

Mark: Do you think you will have any more work done?

Jo: No, I think no matter how much plastic surgery you have done,you can never look perfect.

Mark: Just be glad that it turned out well, that you dont look like one of those 5)celebrities that has had way too much!

Jo: True! ⑤In any case, I cant do anything about it now! Ive just got to try to enjoy the new me!
