1 圆周句的文体特色

圆周句通常“是作者反复斟酌、再三推敲，以便通过语言和读者建立联系的一种手段。它的运用及其效果是多种多样的，因为语言环境，表现的主题，创作的目的，以致语体等方面的不同因素，都会对圆周句的使用产生影响。”［1］

在文学作品中，作者的信息焦点常常借助语言成分的不同安排来表达。这种安排的一般原则是末尾着重(end－weight)，即把一个句子里有分量的成分，最重要的、最想说的话放在句子末尾，形成欲扬先抑或欲抑先扬的效果。前面的句子是为后面的主要意思铺路，从而形成一种高潮，使句子显得生动有力，这种句子更能制造一种悬念，一种气氛。运用这种语言成分安排的句子叫做圆周句(the periodic sentence)，也称作掉尾句。

比如：The people here are mostly，though not all，diligent.

If she has enough money，she will go abroad.

在Jane Austen的Pride and Prejudice里，作者一开始就使用了圆周句：It is a truth universally acknowledged，that a single man in possession of a good fortune，must be in want of a wife.这句话中的前半句让人以为要说十分正经的事情，后半句的出现则达到幽默的艺术效果，一下就吸引了读者。

如果在口语或演讲中能适度使用圆周句式，能够使语言显得更加幽默或者有气势。2008年6月3日，时为参议员的奥巴马在演讲中说道：

“So I’ll say this-there are many words to describe John McCain’s attempt to pass off his embrace of George Bush’s policies as bipartisan and new.BUT CHANGE IS NOT ONE OF THEM.”

奥巴马的最后那句话在圆周句的修饰下说得气势坚定、掷地有声。

许多作家在他们的作品中，都曾运用过圆周句这种文体。

比如，在Gibbon的Memoirs中，有这么一句话：It was at Rome，on the 15th of October，1764，as I sat musing amidst the ruins of the Capitol，while the bare－footed，fryars were singing vespers in the Temple of Jupiter，that the idea of writing the decline and fall of the city first started to my mind.

又如，在Henry James的The Ambassadors中，他这样写道：At the end of the ten minutes he was to spend with her his impression-with all it had thrown off and all it had taken in-was complete.

一般来说，复合句中的从句是为主句服务的，从句可使主句要表达的思想更为突出，主题更加鲜明。但是，上述两个圆周句中，从句被放在了句首。……
