Discovery of Indian Graves a Mixed Blessing

The chance discovery of a seventeenth-century Indian grave site is an exciting find for archeologists but a nuisance for Sally Jones. The burial ground, believed to have been used between 1620 and 1630, was uncovered by construction workers excavating(挖掘, 开凿) for Jones new house. It means her house will have to wait.

Peter Carruthers, an archeologist, estimated(估计) the age of the grave site from the condition of the bones, the pattern of burial, and the buried materials uncovered so far. He believes the graves were used by the now-extinct(灭绝的) Neutral tribe, which had dozens of villages scattered throughout southern Ontario.

They were dubbed (把……称为) “the Neutrals” by the French settlers in North America because they managed to stay at peace while other tribes waged wars in the territories around them.
