When talking about billiards in China,most people will mention snooker “Wonder Kid” Ding Junhui.But now another young star is turning heads.

Pan Xiaoting,dubbed the “Queen of Nine-ball” by her fans, won her first championship title at the Great Lakes Classic qualifier of the Womens Professional Billiards Association(WPBA) tour.

It was the first time the 24-year-old from Shandong competed in the professional league,as financial and visa problems held her back in the past.So,as a first-time player,who is already ranked as the world No.3,had to play qualifiers for each tournament.

Winning the qualifier gave her the right to play in the Great Lakes Classic,held from March 8~12 in Michigan City,US.

“I believe that I can win one or two tournaments along the tour,”a confident Pan said.

Her impressive track record backs up her prediction.Pan won her first championship at the Beijing Open in 1998.It was her first appearance in a major tournament.And she only began to play half a year before!

Since then,Pan became a regular winner at domestic and international tournaments,including the National Games championship(2000),Asian Cup winner(2003),World Cup third-place(2004),and Japanese Open championship(2005).However,with the sports itself billiards still unfamiliar to most Chinese,Pan is almost unknown to the general public.

“I think its a good chance for me to get known by the public to compete in the world-class WPBA,”Pan said.

Some started hearing about her after Ding won nationwide fame last year.Having signed with the same billiards club—the Beijing Star—Pan and Ding were rumored to be secret lovers by some sports fans and tabloids after they were seen shopping together.

Pan denied it,calling the relationship “pure friendship”.

For now,all shes thinking about are her coming games.

“I want to be the worlds No.1 this year,”she said.
