Dating back to the 18th century, Peking Opera has over two hundred years of history. To find out if its4(easy) than a Shakespeare play5(understand), I just went and saw The Revenge of Prince Zidan—the Peking Opera version of Hamlet.

Starting with an orchestra playing traditional Chinese instruments, the opera brought a6    (complete) new sound to my Western ears. At first, I thought what I heard was a violin, but later I learnt that it was an instrument with two strings called jinghu. Then, seeing the main characters come on stage, I was7(surprise)! The costumes and masks were amazing. The performers of course sang in Chinese, but the music, exaggerated movements and mime8(help) get the meanings across to the audience. Before experiencing the opera, I wasnt sure9I would enjoy it. But, in fact, I was on10edge of my seat!

Several years ago, I went to see an advanced cartoon 3D movie Frankenweenie. A few days later, our chief editor gave me a new task and then I sat down for interviews with the films director, Tim Burton, and some of the actors.

As for the movie, I had a lot to talk about as an audience. It was one of the most alluring movies Id ever seen. Even though it was made in black and white, it was so lively that my mind seemed to fill in color in every scene. Burton talked to me about why he chose to use black and white and 3D technology for Frankenweenie. “I like the depth and shadows (阴影) that you can get with black and white,” he said. “And I just thought the 3D technology would be really fun to see.”

Hes right. The whole movie is a lot of fun. A school student Victor Frankenstein lives in a small town, whose dog Sparky is hit by a car one day. Victor is very sad and lonely until he brings the dog back to life inspired by an experiment (实验) of his science teacher about the power of electricity. Victors classmates learn what happens and also try to bring their pets back from the dead. These creatures end up with causing widespread damage (破坏) throughout the town. Finally, the dog gives up its own life to save Victor.

My favorite part is the moment when Victor brings Sparky back to life, because I have a very strong love for animals. This scene isnt the funniest, but it is really heart-warming to me.

Id like to recommend this movie to kids because of the unusual and lively characters. And it does attract those who are interested in cartoon techniques to see this film. The effects will blow your mind out of the water.

Last weekend, I went to the cinema to watch Journey to the West with my friends. We hoped to enjoy us there. However, some of the people there makes me feel very happy.

When we arrived there, the movie had on for ten minutes. We found our seats quick and sat down. Whats worse, a few guys were talking loudly or even shouting when they saw some excited pictures. Also, some people threw away plastic bag, paper and other rubbish on the floor, that made the floor very dirty.

I think we should follow the rules in the public to make public places more comfortable.

As a child, Marta was surprisingly creative in painting pictures before she received any formal training. At age 8, she told me she planned to become a film?maker and stuck to that until, at 17, she and I decided that instead of taking a course in film, she should be apprenticed (当学徒) to a brilliant sound editor, Bruce Nyznik, and his talented partners such as Peter Tilley, with whom I was then working.

Martas love of trains led to the creation of her first film, Train of Thought, in 1991. After that change from sound to film, she continued to direct and produce, as well as edit. Her works include Shattered Dreams, a 2006 documentary about a disadvantaged youth in Toronto; The Saviour of Ceylon, a film about the heroism of RCAF officer Leonard Birchall; and the seven-part television series Being 80 with Jean Vanier.

Marta was diagnosed (诊断) with cancer nine years before her death. She saw her cancer as something to be grateful for because it made her concentrate her attention on lasting spiritual realities, rather than the temporary passions that define (阐明) most of our lives and most of the time. She came to her great trial with some hope that her physical pain could promote spiritual growth, and tried to find the meaning of the cancer that threatened her life.

In her final year or so, she began to write about her experience with cancer and the inspiration that came with it. She meant to give purpose to her life by helping others. Above all, she wanted her friends and family to share the help she was able to give.

In a conversation shortly before Martas death, I expressed some discouragements in my life, and she advised me to concentrate on something for which I was grateful.

1. What did Marta do to achieve her goal?

A. Take a related course. B. Pay a visit to Bruce Nyznik.

C. Make friends with Peter Tilley. D. Learn from a famous sound editor.

Avi Bendahan and Shijia Jiang are unlikely cooperators.

Jiang is a classically trained performer of Peking Opera, or Jingju. Bendahan is a local actor, dancer in Canada. He and Jiang together are the core (核心) of Jingju Canada, a theater company that adapts the ancient Chinese art in Montreal and across Canada.

“I really want people in the West to know Peking Opera,” says Jiang. The two are, in a sense, building an audience for the art form in and outside of the citys Chinese community.

“Peking Opera is very strict, and hard to understand. They dont speak standard Chinese. No, they speak the Peking Opera dialect (方言),” Meng Rong, the leader of the Confucius Institute in Quebec says.

One of Jingju Canadas approaches to that problem is to translate.

Their first show was 2011s Crossroads.

“It was the first time Jingju Canada translated a Chinese opera show into English,” says Bendahan. “And it was the first time we created newish characters.”

Bendahan handles the translations. “The language is very hard for me,” says Jiang, referring to English. Jiangs strong point in performance is combat—she trained in China as a wudan, a fighting woman.

But change, of course, presents challenges.

“They dont want to lose the core things from Peking Opera,” says Rong. Thats where Jiangs other speciality (專长), besides combat, comes in. She was among the first in China to study the new-for-Jingju program of directing. “We learned new ways of directing,” she says. “We used music, dance, movies, and then put them together with Peking Opera.”

“Crossroads was very successful,” says Rong. “The audiences really loved it. And I think for every culture, if the nice part can be shown to the public, and everybody understands and everybody enjoys it, why dont we do it?”

5. Why does Jiang work with Bendahan on Jingju Canada?

A. To help Bendahan study Chinese.

B. To develop her friendship with Bendahan.

C. To help foreigners know about Peking Opera.

D. To perform Peking Opera in Chinese communities.

6. What makes Peking Opera less popular according to Rong?

A. Its boring settings. B. Its outdated music. C. Its unique language. D. Its special characters.

7. What did Jiang do when preparing for Crossroads?

A. She used a new method of directing. B. She gave up her directing program.

C. She trained other performers. D. She translated the text.

8. How does Rong feel about Jiang and Bendahans work?

A. Shocked. B. Satisfied. C. Doubtful. D. Thankful.
