Reputation Index in University Rankings:Function and Use

SU Yongjian, SONG Mengshang Page 1

Abstract:Reputation is not only a symbol of university quality, but also an important capital of university development. With the emergence of rankings in higher education system, reputation, as a subjective cognition,is gradually incorporated into the index system of university ranking and endowed with a measurable and computable“objective attribute”.After a hundred years of development, reputation index exists in different forms in the ranking system of modern universities. The reputation index in university rankings raises the legitimacy and effectiveness of university rankings, and urges universities to attach importance to reputation building. However,at the same time, there are some main problems in the use of reputation index, such as lack of scientific basis in indicator design, prejudice in reputation investigation and alienation of university competition. In order to give full play to the role of reputation index in university rankings, all stakeholders need to make good use of reputation index, which requires not only the ranking institutions and all stakeholders to form a certain degree of consensus on the basis of communication, but also the collective actions of all parties.

WANG Zhenglu, ZHANG Bo, WU Shangran Page 11

Abstract:The practice of evidence-based teacher education started from evidence-based medicine, which is an inevitable trend for the development of evidence-based medicine to the field of teacher education. The continuous penetration of big data technology and the evidence-based orientation of teacher training are the internal motivations for the development of evidence-based teacher education practice in the era of big data. However, the current evidence-based teacher education practice in the era of big data is facing real problems such as inadequate evidence-based awareness, incomplete evidence-based mechanisms, unfinished evidence-based databases, and weak evidence-based atmosphere. For these problems, corresponding solutions should be adopted, which include enhancing evidence-based awareness, establishing a sound evidence-based mechanism, building an evidence-based database, and creating an integrated evidence-based atmosphere of“knowledge-evidence-implementation-monitoring”.

Development Strategies of Liberal Arts in Engineering Industry-based Characteristic Research Universities

XIE Huixiang, YANG Chunren, GAN Guolong Page 21

Abstract:The engineering industry-based characteristic research universities(EIBCRU) are an important force in the construction of“Double First-Class”in China, and the development of liberal arts is an inevitable requirement for them to build an ecological system of first-class disciplines and promote the construction of“Double First-Class”. The empirical study has found that liberal arts development of EIBCRU has become a scale, and has made overall progress in every-round national first-level discipline evaluation. The discipline education ability as a whole is superior to the discipline innovation ability. However, the lack of discipline leading talents and the insufficient output of landmark teaching and scientific research achievements are the common weaknesses in the development of liberal arts in such universities. According to the life cycle theory of discipline organization, the development of liberal arts in EIBCRU has got through the“generation period”and is now in the early stage of the“growth period”.In the future, according to the principle of“acting according to capacity and according to needs”and Ernest Boyer's four academic views, EIBCRU can adopt three different strategies, namely, developing teaching liberal arts, integrating applied liberal arts and innovating liberal arts,to build fine liberal arts.

LIU Yuhong Page 33

Abstract:Su Shi broke the strong wall of calligraphy in Jin and Tang Dynasties by creating meaning and thinking, formed the style of advocating meaning in calligraphy in Song Dynasty, and became the leader of the literary world and the commander of the innovation of calligraphy style. From this perspective, this paper discusses that at the moment when the state calls for the development of“interdisciplinary”, the parallel development of literature and art and calligraphy should be broken, and the integration and comprehensive research of disciplines should be speeded up. Under the reflection of the traditional concept of the unity of calligraphers and their works, the“interdisciplinary”development opens a new way to inherit Chinese culture.

Abstract:Under the impetus of the“Top Global University Program”(hereby referred to as TGU Program), the enrolled Japanese universities have gradually achieved“a comprehensive internationalization”. Using Knight and de Wit's Internationalization Process Model as the analysis framework,by comprehensively analyzing the five Japanese universities which are selected from the TGU Program and ranked in the world's top 100,it is found that the five Japanese universities demonstrates obvious theoretical rationality. It has formed an effective logical connection and action response among the five procedures, that is, shaping internationalization awareness and commitment, internationalization planning layout, implementation, feedback, and strengthening of internationalization, which can ensure the effectiveness and the sustainability of internationalization development to a large extent. China's Double First-class universities can appropriately learn from the experience of Japan's universities, such as building an international methodology system suitable for their own university conditions and academic conditions, innovating international exchange and cooperation paradigms, reshaping the core values of student-centered internationalization, and reforming governance system as to better support internationalization. For China's universities, these expected changes will contribute to continuously improving the methods and paths that can enhance the level of internationalization and internationalization capabilities, and providing sustainable support for truly building into the world-class universities with global impact.

Obstacles to Exam-oriented Learning and Institutional Breakthroughs in View of the Transformation of Learning Methods

BAI Junyi Page 91

Abstract:The transformation and optimization of students' learning method play an important role in improving the quality of talent training. In the process of optimizing learning methods,exam-oriented learning behavior should be emphasized and changed.Although academic circles and universities have carried out a series of explorations and reforms corresponding to exam-oriented learning, this problem has never been solved, and it is even getting worse.Tackling exam-oriented learning behavior requires changing the research perspective and paying attention to the institutional elements behind the behavior, and new institutionalism can provide enlightenment. According to the perspective of new institutionalism, the exam-oriented learning behavior is the result of the combined effect of the three basic elements of the three institutions in the university field, which is manifested in the benefit guidance of the evaluation institution to students and teachers, the expectation of performance contained in the role of students, and the external result of shaping the cultural environment-oriented cognition. To achieve a breakthrough in the institution of obstacles to exam-oriented learning behavior, the above three elements should also be proceeded from, namely, promoting the improvement of the validity of the course assessment by correcting the measurement tendency, driving the reform of the teaching evaluation institution by changing the value standpoint, and reconciling the internal cognition of undergraduates'roles are targeted institution optimization paths.

DING Hongwei Page 112

Abstract:Insufficient disciplinary integration and superficial interdisciplinary practice between liberal arts and sciences are the long-lasting problems of the current Japanese talent training process.Disciplinary integration, the interdisciplinary practice of arts and sciences, and big data are the key words for the construction of new liberal arts in the post-industrial era. The new liberal arts are characterized by openness and integration, and the cultivation of professional talents in Japanese language with prominent industrial characteristics should,on the one hand, promote the opening of the talent training system to achieve the intersection of arts and sciences, and on the other hand, enhance the degree of interaction between the subject and object of education to achieve the essence of the quality of talent training. Therefore, the openness and change of student' learning choices, curriculum construction, and professional construction are necessary conditions for the optimization of the Japanese talent training model in colleges and universities under the background of the new liberal arts. The diversified“Japanese +”talent training mode enhances the interaction between majors, and the interaction between majors and industries through market-oriented and cross-border integration is the key strategy for optimizing the Japanese language talent training mode.
