The Search Warrant pieces together the real-life story of Dora Bruder， a young Jewish girl who went missing in Paris in December 1941. Modiano attempts to retrace Doras movements across Paris and his book is full of evocative descriptions of quiet squares and streets.

By tracing Doras possible steps， Modiano evocatively recreates the twilight atmosphere of Paris under occupation.

Kazuo Ishiguro： The Remains of the Day

The Remains of the Day tells the story of Stevens， the aged butler of Darlington Hall， and his ill judged life choices that saw him being involved with British fascism in the interwar years.

This allusion to British fascism in particular is something that makes this novel stand out; it is a subject matter not often discussed or even taught.

Id been retired for four years， when a friend suggested university. I thought he was joking—I was rubbish at school and failed my 11 plus. But we love to compete over Mastermind and University challenge， and he thought Id make it. And he was absolutely right！

I did a foundation course first， which was part time at the University Lifelong Learning Centre （LLC）， two nights a week and the odd Saturday. I did quite well， and that gave me the confidence to do a full time， three year degree. Im passionate about art，and I always wanted to be here for the journey and not the destination. That sounds really corny， but it was the truth in my case.

Initially it was a bit strange fitting in with my course mates. They were all 18， straight out of sixth form or college. Over time， though， theyve all been fine—now， we all get on really well and there is no issue. Ive made plenty of friends as a member of the mature students society， and I do some volunteering through the LLC， chatting to prospective students about my experience of coming to university. I tell them my story and basically encourage them to give it a go because youve got nothing to lose. I like to think Ive convinced a few of them.

I have no regrets at all. Enrolling in university was the best piece of advice Ive received in years， especially post-retirement. I needed routine in my life; I needed purpose. Im not going to spend my day in the bookies or the pub. If youve got a passion for something， you should pursue it.

Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this， or because they are not willing to do the work， that most people do not listen well.

Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as “bracketing”. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires， to experience as far as possible someone elses world from the inside， stepping into his or her shoes.

Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well， what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder， as we listen， how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us.

It wasnt until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic （有療效的）. In about a quarter of the patients I saw， surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy （心理疗法）， before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. The bad health effects of sleep loss during the week cant be repaid by longer weekend sleep， according to a new study.

Researchers have long known that sleep deprivation （剝夺） can cause weight gain and increase other health risks. But for those who force themselves out of bed every weekday after too few hours of shut eye， they hope turning off the alarm on Saturday and Sunday will repay the weekly sleep debt and remove any ill effects.

The research， published in Current Biology， crushes those hopes. Despite complete freedom to sleep during a weekend recovery period， people in a sleep lab who were limited to five hours of sleep on weekdays gained nearly three pounds over two weeks and experienced disorders that would increase their risk for diabetes over the long term.

“If there are benefits of catch-up sleep， theyre gone when you go back to your daily schedule. Its very short lived，” said Kenneth Wright， director of the sleep and chronobiology lab at the University of Colorado at Boulder. “These health effects are long term. Its kind of like smoking once was—people would smoke and wouldnt see an immediate effect on their health， but people will say now that smoking is not a healthy lifestyle choice. I think sleep is in the early stage of where smoking used to be.”

Wright said that the study suggests people should put sleep in the first place cutting out the “sleep stealers” such as watching television shows or spending time on their phones.
