Lately, my 90-year-old mother has been sleepier and sleepier. This is very strange and worrying. At the same time, my 92-year-old father has been suffering his own health problems. It is a terrible thing to see my father struggle to get my mother to talk, say something, when she doesnt have the energy.

The other day, I recalled how my mother used to visit a woman named Mrs. Demopolis, a Greek immigrant, who made the best baklava (果仁蜜餅) in the world! She gave lessons on baking it to my mother. Also, my mother often baked baklava at home. As I spoke of this over the phone, my silent mother perked up and said how much shed like to have one again.

Now, they live in Florida and I live in Wales, UK, so I cant go and bring her some baklava or even make some in her kitchen. But what I did suggest was that my father could buy some baklava at a Greek restaurant and I could do the same, and wouldnt it be fun to eat our baklava at exactly the same time and so, be together sharing the moment and the pleasure? My parents loved the idea and we decided to do it.

Two days later we both had our baklava and shared the experience. It meant a lot to my parents, and to me, to do this. My mother said she wanted to do this again, maybe with another food or even baklava again! Why not? And as she only keeps losing weight instead of gaining, it is good for her to find foods that appeal to her appetite (胃口). It is becoming harder to find ways to communicate over the phone, but this is at least a very good way to do so.

Each year, this family displays 3,000 pumpkins (南瓜) in front of their home for the Halloween season. Yes, you read that right. Ric Griffith puts out one jack-o-lantern (南瓜燈) for every person who lives in Kenova.

Of course, he doesnt do it all on his own. He has a lot of help from his family, and also from members of the community who are super-proud of what has become quite the tourist attraction over the years. More than 30,000 people stop by to see the amazing display, which includes jack-o-lanterns cut to look like the faces of famous people, animals, cartoon characters, and other creative designs. Its certainly a must-see as part of the areas Ceredo-Kenova Autumnfest.

To fit in all 3,000 pumpkins, Griffith and his helpers spread them across the homes garden and front porch (门廊), as well as on the roof!

Griffith began the tradition back in 1978 with just five pumpkins and, many years later, its much bigger and better. People cant help but come to the area, walking along the sidewalk outside the house to get that perfect Halloween experience.

“Locals take great pride in it, and then there are people from around the country who plan fall trips and include it in their trips so they can see it,” said Tyson Compton, president of the Cabell-Huntington Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Its really something.” “Its become a tradition for many people in our area, and it feels good to keep that going,” Griffith said.

Molly Gordon once explained that there are two types of fear. Fear one is the one Im sure youre most familiar with. As Molly says, “Fear one magnifies (放大) danger while minimizing your sense of ability.” So, this is the fear we want to convert (轉化) into Fear two. Fear two is the fear that will take all your anxious and nervous energy and focus your energy on action steps that will lead you towards achieving your goals. Yes! Thats the kind of fear you want.

The way you convert Fear one into Fear two is by taking the time to think about the situation and learn the real fear and know what action you can take. You also need to make the decision as to whether youre willing to accept the risk.

Here is an example. You want to change your job but you have some fears. First, you should look at the fears you have and see whether theyre real or not. You should then consider if there are any measures you can take to mitigate the risks. And finally, you should ask yourself, “Am I willing to accept those risks?”

One of the fears is that you may lose the friendship of your co-workers. Is that a real fear? Yes, maybe. Is there action you can take? Yes, you can make the extra effort to keep in contact with them by going to lunch with them or setting up some other activities. You can also remind yourself that youll probably make new friends at your new job.

And, the final step is to decide whether getting a new job, where you might make even better friends, and gaining new skills are worth the risk of losing the friendship of the co-workers you have now. Thats a decision only you can make.

12. Why do people want Fear two?

A. It can help them set some goals.            B. It can keep them away from danger.

C. It can help them take effective action. D. It can stop them from feeling nervous.

13. What should you do first to turn Fear one into Fear two?

A. Pay no attention to risks.                 B. Ask for some suggestions.

C. Know what you really fear.                    D. Find some examples to refer to.

14. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. Reduce.            B. Realize.                  C. Measure.          D. Accept.

15. What should you do in the last step?

A. Make a decision quickly.                  B. Gain new skills in the new job.

C. Keep the friendship of the co-workers. D. Consider whether the gain is worth the risk.
