01. Malaysia eyes opportunity to become regional hub for growing trade under BRI, says PM

Apr. 22, 2019 (Xinhua) — The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) will increase trade between Southeast Asia and China, and Malaysia is looking forward to serving as a hub for the greater exchange in the region, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has said. Mahathir is set to visit China to attend the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation later this month. It will be Mahathir's second visit to China since he assumed office last May.

02. Myanmar President praises Yangon Circular Railway upgrading project

Apr. 1, 2019 (China Daily) — Myanmar President U Win Myint and his accompanying party inspected the CP101 project, which is part of the upgrading and reconstruction project of the Yangon Circular Railway undertaken by Sinohydro Bureau 10 Co, in Yangon, Myanmar. The President and his entourage visited the construction site of Insein Railway Station, giving a high evaluation of the overall construction work. As the first railway project of a Chinese-funded enterprise in Myanmar, the first construction section of the project was completed in 2018, and entered the official operation stage.

03. Chinas high-speed rail technology goes overseas

Apr. 3, 2019 (China Daily) — A shield tunneling machine was put into operation at the construction site of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project in Indonesia, marking the first piece of Chinas high-speed rail technology to go overseas. According to the target requirements, the rail line undertaken by POWERCHINA aspired to complete the visualization of key construction sites before the end of March. To date, nearly half of the 60 sites of POWERCHINAs 85-kilometer-long rail line have started construction.

04. AIIB approves the first project in Laos

Apr. 5, 2019 (Xinhua) — The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has approved the banks first project in Laos and expects it to directly benefit over half a million people. The bank approved a loan of US$ 40 million to improve a critical section of National Road 13, with 58km of it expected to be repaired to improve functionality, safety and climate resilience. This investment will improve one of the most vital transport routes in the country. The updates to the road will enable quicker and safer transportation.

05. ASEAN members review progress of economic work plans

Apr. 5, 2019 (Xinhua) — Senior economic officials from 10 member countries of the ASEAN, the ASEAN Secretariat and four negotiating partnerships have met in Vientiane, Laos to review the progress of the implementation of economic activities. ASEAN senior economic officials were updated on the progress of the implementation of economic activities. They also heard about the priority work plans with Thailand as the chair for ASEAN 2019 and the theme for the year being “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”.

06. A new direct flight to link China, Brunei

Apr. 12, 2019 (Xinhua) — A new air route will be launched between the city of Changsha, Hunan, China and Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. The route will use an Airbus A320 aircraft and be operated by Royal Brunei Airlines. One round trip flight is scheduled from April 16 to June 28. Another round trip flight will be added from June 29. With the opening of the new route, Changsha will have direct flights to 27 cities in all ASEAN countries. The flights will serve as a bridge for cooperation between central China and ASEAN countries.

07. China-Singapore industrial park sees rapid development

Apr. 13, 2019 (Xinhua) — The China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park has seen rapid development and attracted about 5,000 foreign companies since it was established in 1994. The industrial park — the first flagship intergovernmental cooperation projects between the two countries — has received US$ 31.5 billion in foreign investment and realized a total import and export volume of over US$ 1 trillion over the past 25 years. So far, more than 350 Singaporean firms have participated in the construction and development of the Suzhou Industrial Park.

08. Poland to attend China-ASEAN Expo

Apr. 15, 2019 (China Daily) — Poland has confirmed it will attend the 16th China-ASEAN Expo as a special partner. It will be the first time a European country participates in the annual gathering hosted by China and 10 ASEAN countries. This years event to be held on September 20-23, 2019 in Nanning, Guangxi will give Poland a platform to promote its national image to an international influence. Tadeusz Koscinski, Economic Development Minister of Poland, will lead the Polish delegation at the expo.
