40th Anniversary of the Tangshan Earthquake

July 28, Tangshan, Hebei Province: Chinese President Xi Jinping (center) visits Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park to leave flowers and pay his respect to those who died in the devastating 1976 earthquake and heroes sacrificed in the relief work. On the 40th anniversary of the Tangshan earthquake, Chinese President Xi Jinping said the countrys disaster prevention, reduction and relief capabilities should be improved. Xi made the remarks on July 28 during an inspection tour of Tangshan in North China.

The 7.8-magnitude quake struck the city of Tangshan in Hebei Province on July 28, 1976, killing more than 240,000 people and destroying virtually all buildings. China has suffered some of the worlds worst natural disasters, which are diverse, frequent, hit many parts of the country and cause severe damage. Despite notable improvements to Chinas disaster relief system, there is still room for improvement, Xi said. At present, the Chinese government is shifting priority from relief to prevention, from divided efforts to comprehensive preparation, and from reducing damages to addressing risks.
