While famous foreign architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.

Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Chinese architect Wang Shu won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize. He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.

Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations. The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The curves (曲線) of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.

By making the abandoned (废弃的) bricks of different ages into walls, roofs and corridors with traditional techniques, Wangs creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements.

Wangs works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize.

Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. “That is only evidence that traditions once existed,” he said. “Many Chinese people think tradition means old things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created.”

“Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are,” said Wang.

The study of traditions should be combined with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, he said.

24. Wangs winning of the prize means that Chinese architects are.

A. following the latest world trend B. getting international recognition

C. working harder than ever before D. relying little on foreign architects

25. What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most?

A. Its hilly environment. B. Its large size.

C. Its unique style. D. Its various functions.

26. What made Wangs architectural design a success?

A. The mixture of different shapes. B. The balance of East and West.

C. The use of popular techniques. D. The harmony of old and new.

27. What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang?

A. Spread them to the world. B. Preserve them at museums.

C. Teach them in universities. D. Recreate them in practice.

For Western designers, China and its rich culture have long been an inspiration for Western creative.

“Its no secret that China has always been a source of inspiration for designers,” says Amanda Hill, chief creative officer at A+E Networks, a global media company and home to some of the biggest fashion shows.

A few years ago, the China Through a Looking Glass exhibition in New York exhibited 140 pieces of China-inspired fashionable clothing alongside Chinese works of art, with the aim of exploring the influence of Chinese aesthetics (美學) on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences.

“China is impossible to overlook,” says Hill. “Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion—they are central to its movement.” Of course, not only are todays top Western designers being influenced by China—some of the best designers of contemporary fashion are themselves Chinese. “Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galiano, Albaz, Marc Jacobs and beating them hands down in design and sales,” adds Hill.

For Hill, it is impossible not to talk about China as the leading player when discussing fashion. “The most famous designers are Chinese, so are the models, and so are the consumers,” she says. “China is no longer just another market; in many senses it has become the market. If you talk about fashion today, you are talking about China—its influences, its direction, its breathtaking clothes, and how young designers and models are finally acknowledging that in many ways.”

28. What can we learn about the exhibition in New York?

A. It promoted the sales of artworks. B. It attracted a large number of visitors.

C. It showed ancient Chinese clothes. D. It aimed to introduce Chinese models.

29. What does Hill say about Chinese women?

A. They are setting the fashion. B. They start many fashion campaigns.

C. They admire super models. D. They do business all over the world.

30. What does the underlined phrase “taking on” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. Learning from. B. Looking down on. C. Working with. D. Competing against.

31. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Young Models Selling Dreams to the World

B. A Chinese Art Exhibition Held in New York

C. Differences Between Eastern and Western Aesthetics

D. Chinese Culture Fueling International Fashion Trends

Chinese people love food made of flour, like dumplings, noodles, and pancakes, to name just a few. And in the hands of skilled artisans, flour can be made into lovely models of people or animals to be enjoyed and played with, which brings a unique kind of pleasure. This art form is called dough figurine (面塑). Among the various art styles of dough figurines, Beijings Dough Figurine Lang is a unique folk art, which is filled with the rich history and customs of the capital city. In 2008, it was included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.

It was created by Lang Shaoan. Most of the dough figurines are animals and characters from legends, historical stories, and local operas. The finished product is either put at the end of a thin stick or on a table for display. Some are mostly for children to eat or play with, with simple forms and vivid decorations, while some are fine pieces of artwork for display only. For this reason, during the making process they are often mixed with additives to better preserve the finished products.

Lang Jiaziyu, born in 1995, is the third-generation inheritor of Dough Figurine Lang. When he was 15, he created Beijing Olympic Mascots-shaped dough figurines which were highly praised. He looks a bit more fashionable than other folk artisans. In his skilled hands, pop culture icons are popular with young people.

Like most of the other intangible cultural heritage handicrafts in China, Dough Figurine Lang does not get as much attention from the public. Few young people are willing to take the time to master a skill that does not make money, which has led to a decline in the number of those who are devoted to the handicraft. Good handicrafts need the devotion of artisans from one generation to another.

32. What is special about Dough Figurine Lang?

A. It reflects Beijings culture. B. It is created by famous artists.

C. It shows peoples lifestyles. D. It is popular with both tourists and the locals.

33. Why do artisans add additives to dough figurines?

A. To make them taste good. B. To better preserve them.

C. To help shape dough into various forms. D. To keep colors brighter.

34. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A. Suggestions for folk artisans. B. Art styles of dough figurines.

C. Lang Jiaziyus achievements as an artisan. D. The popularity of dough figurines.

35. What is the main purpose of the text?

A. To call on people to master a skill.

B. To appeal to people to value this folk art.

C. To teach people ways to appreciate the handicraft.

D. To persuade people to protect national cultural heritage.
