乔是一位75岁的老爷爷。每年假期,他的孙子、孙女都会来看他。不幸的是,在这一次的聚会中,他弄丢了他最珍贵的手表。为此,伤心的乔和他的孙子、孙女开始寻找丢失的手表……

Joe was a 75⁃year⁃old man. He lived very happily and formed a beautiful family. His children grew up and moved to different cities in pursuit of a good career and future. He lived in a small village, carrying the memories of his dead wife. Joe had four grandchildren and they used to visit him during their holidays.

It was the vacation time again, and Joe was eagerly waiting for the arrival of his grandchildren. He was preparing his home for the kids, cleaning the home, mowing the garden, rearranging (重新摆放) the household items and buying their favourite foods and dresses. Unfortunately, in the busy arrangements, he lost his favourite watch. The watch was gifted by his dead wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch very much and it became his sole companion after his wifes death.

He didnt realize the watch was missing at first and was happy receiving the kids at home. It was only the next day when he was about to take a bath that he realized the watch was missing. He saw the watch last when he was arranging things in the barn (谷仓). He was shocked and very upset.

His grandchildren asked him why he was so sad and asked him what troubled him. Joe said, “Dear children, I lost the most precious watch in my life. It was gifted by your grandma and I lost it while cleaning the home! I feel like Im missing my heart.” Joe was in tears and the children promised him that they would search for the watch for him.

One granddaughter asked, “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last time before it was missing?” Joe replied, “I saw the watch last time when I was cleaning the barn!”

Then, the children decided to search for the watch in the barn. The barn was full of waste materials, books, scraps, broken furniture, etc. The children searched for more than 2 hours but could not find it. Joe was completely shattered (非常驚愕难过的) and asked the children to stop searching as they could not find anything.

One grandson didnt want to give up. He asked, “Grandpa, can the watch work? Does it make a ‘tick tick’ sound?” Joe nodded in agreement.

Ⅰ. Difficult sentence

He lived in a small village, carrying the memories of his dead wife.

译文:他生活在一个小村庄里,心中装满了对亡妻的思念。

分析:非谓语动词carrying的逻辑主语就是句子的主语he,carrying the memories of his dead wife在句中作伴随状语。

Ⅱ. Expressions for emotion

He was shocked and very upset. 他感到非常震惊和沮丧。

I feel like Im missing my heart. 我感觉我的心丢了。

Joe was in tears. 乔眼含热泪。

Joe was completely shattered. 乔完全心碎了。

Ⅲ. Pattern to learn

He was preparing his home for the kids, cleaning the home, mowing the garden, rearranging the household items and buying their favourite foods and dresses. 他正在为孩子们布置家,打扫房子,给花园除草,重新摆放家庭用品,买他们最喜欢的食物和衣服。

【信息提取】本句是一个简单句,但是它有5个并列谓语。当一个主语同时做出一系列的动作时,会出现多个谓语动词并列的现象,通常这些并列的谓语动词需要在时态上保持一致,谓语动词的重复部分可以省略,本句中后面的4个谓语动词都省略了构成过去进行时的was。

一、语篇研读

要想续写内容与所给材料内容连贯、衔接紧密,必须充分了解所给材料大意。本文是一篇记叙文,文章分析如下:

二、情节构思

我们可以基于原文和续写段落首句提供的信息,构思要续写的故事情节。这一构思分为四步。

第一步,根据已给出的文本推断续写的方向。

文章开头介绍75岁的乔的老年生活状况。假期来临,乔满心期待他的孙子、孙女的到來。糟糕的是,在忙碌的准备中乔弄丢了妻子送给他的手表。于是,乔和孩子们开始一起寻找丢失的手表,可找了几个小时还是没找到。乔的其中一个孙子似乎有了个好主意。他将如何帮助爷爷找到手表呢?这就是文章给我们的留白,也是我们续写的方向。

第二步,根据续写第一段的首句,我们可以看出这个小男孩已经准备好重新去谷仓找手表,而且特意叮嘱其他小伙伴不要跟随。那么,我们可以从以下几个问题入手:

(1)How would other children feel?

(2)Would they follow what he said?

(3)What would he do next to find the watch?

(4)Would he find the watch?

第三步,根据续写第二段所给出的段首句倒推续写第一段要写什么。

根据续写第二段段首句中的关键词find,我们可以非常肯定地推测出那个小男孩已经找到了丢失的手表。那么,他是如何找到手表的呢?最后,大家又从中领悟到了什么道理呢?同时,续写第二段段首句表达了乔失而复得的感受,为了使这两段衔接自然,我们可以推测出续写第一段末尾应该提及小男孩找到了手表。

第四步,围绕续写第二段所给出的段首句进行提问:

(1)How would the little boy answer Joes question?

(2)How would Joe feel after hearing the answer?

(3)How can the ending reflect the theme?

三、润色成篇

在续写的过程中要注意“续”的原则,做到主题、情节、语言风格一致。具体如下:

(1)通过分析,本文的主题是弘扬家庭成员之间的爱和寂静的力量,续写时应注意结局的走向;

(2)续写的情节应和前面的开始和发展吻合,要根据人物的性格特点进行合理的预测;

(3)前文有情感、动作和环境描写,且用了并列谓语、非谓语动词作状语和状语从句,续写时应尽量模仿并运用这些语言特色;

(4)续写时注意句子长短相间,句型丰富和语法、用词、标点符号的准确性。
