The Popular Attribute of “Two Mountains” Theory⊙Xu Jiagui & Zeng Jiahua

The popularization of theory has been the consistent pursuit of classical Marxist writers in their dissemination of scientific theories. As an important part of Xi Jinpings Thought on Ecological Civilization, the “Two Mountains” theory is the latest achievement of the Sinicization of Marxist ecological thought and an important guiding ideology of Chinas ecological civilization construction. Coming from the practice of popularization, the “Two Mountains” theory has always kept pace with the times while enriching and improving itself unceasingly. It manifests an attribute of thorough popularization of scientific theories as it is deeply epochal, people-oriented and popular. The popularization of the “Two Mountains” theory realizes the effective connection between scientific theories and peoples cognition, reflects the theoretical character and essential requirements of Marxism, so it is the inherent need of the Communist Party of China to unite and lead the people of all ethnic groups to promote the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Ecological Safety, Ecological Development and Ecological Justice: Three-Dimensional Construction of Peoples Better Ecological Life⊙Cao Jianing

It is an overall requirement to take people as the center and meet their growing needs in the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era. A better ecological life is aimed at improving peoples “sense of gain, happiness and security” which is mainly reflected in satisfying the three-dimensional pursuit of values in ecological security, ecological development and ecological justice. To resolve the three contradictions of insufficient ability to cope with ecological risks, insufficient degree of ecological development and unbalanced distribution of ecological interests that China is faced with, we should take three corresponding measures in practice, namely, jointly building ecological barriers to guard ecological security, jointly promoting ecological development to enrich ecological products, and sharing ecological interests to gurantee ecological justice. In doing so we can promote the high-quality development in the construction of ecological civilization.

New Business Transition Toward Ecological Civilization⊙John Cobb, Jr., trans., Lu Weidong

The large-scale international trade initiated by classical liberal economics represented by Adam Smith has destroyed the local market, traditional village economy and community life. Dr. Cobb believes that it is unsustainable to continue along this road, which will certainly threaten the near future, and pain and fear will hurt a large number of people. We have to shift the goal from the growth of commodity quantity to the growth of the well-being of the people. In a world of self-sufficient local communities, human beings will be happier. As a whole, the community should be involved in many decisions about local production and how to protect and develop local industries. The community will recognize the tremendous contribution that local businesses are making and that their profitability depends on the health of the community as a whole. Business people, like others, have the ability to care about the community, and once the over glorification of competition is downgraded, cooperation will become a common phenomenon.

Chinese Ecological Culture has the Power to Save the World: An Interview with Academician and World-renowned Process Philosopher John Cobb Jr.⊙John Cobb, Jr. & Hu Yingfeng

Academician Cobb, a world-renowned postmodern thinker, ecological economist, process philosopher, and a leader in constructive postmodernism, has been committed to promoting ecological civilization worldwide for many years. He is a firm supporter of Chinas ecological civilization construction and is the first internationally eminent scholar who declares that “the hope of ecological civilization lies in China”. Recently, Hu Yingfeng, researcher and editor-in-chief of Journal of Poyang Lake with the help of Dr. Fan Meijun, project director of the US-China Postmodern Development Institute, conducted an online interview with Academician Cobb. In the interview, Cobb said that Chinese culture is fundamentally an ecological culture which has the power to save the world. Chinese ecological culture, especially the values of harmony between heaven, earth and man, and the interaction between yin and yang, advocated by Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism as its foundation, should become the pillar concept of ecological civilization. He advocated that China should avoid the failings of Western industrial civilization and go directly to ecological civilization, and believed that this would be a great and rare opportunity for Chinas development.

Biotic Community, Inherent Value and Respect for Nature: Critique of Modern Western Environmental Philosophy Based on Taylors Biocentric Ethics⊙Wang Pengwei

Taylor is a typical representative of the biocentrism of modern environmental philosophy. However, in Taylors theory there are some flaws that can be mainly summarized as follows: he believes that human beings are only a common member of the biotic community; he assumes that there exists a concept of normative inherent value and separates it from the internal value. The ethical standards and rules of respect for nature are hence infeasible in practice. The failure of Taylors theory proves that modern western environmental philosophy is not workable. Only by adhering to new anthropocentrism and holism can environmental philosophy be of practicality.

The Maternal Characteristics of Whiteheads Organic Philosophy⊙Ma Cuiming

Whiteheads philosophy differs from traditional philosophy in its unique manifestation of maternal characteristics. In terms of cosmology, it considers that “actual entity” plays a cohesive role as the basis for the creation of all things. In the view of nature, it regards nature as a living organism, and advocates the beauty of nature, ecological harmony, and the responsibility and obligation of human beings to protect nature. In the aspect of education, it believes that the growth of students cannot be separated from motherly teachers who give them proper guidance. As to the realization of civilization, it holds that “great people” are those who are good at applying persuasive methods while “business” falls into the category of persuasive social technology and the progress of civilization shows as a process of persuasion over conquest. The maternal characteristics of Whiteheads philosophy highlight its special constructiveness as a postmodern philosophy.

An Outline of Jixia Taoist Ecological Philosophy☉Yao Haitao

In the philosophy before Qin Dynasty, an important part is Jixia School whose Taoism boasts the most abundant literature, the most respected academic status and the most far-reaching influence on later generations. The ecological philosophy of Jixia Taoism is centered on “Tao”. From the logic of Taoist theory, as the inheritor of primitive Taoism, Jixia Taoism in a sense realizes the unity of Lao Zis natural way and Zhuang Zis physical and mental way. Its bidirectional attention to society and nature manifests its positive engagement in the world, so on the whole, it has the remarkable characteristics of spreading itself to the society. From the general principle of Taoist theory, Jixia Taoism advocates a thinking mode of promoting ways of heaven to settle human affairs, and proposes a holistic view of nature in which all things in heaven and on earth are united as one, and the universe changes into a whole. In terms of the subsections of Taoist theory, Jixia Taoism illustrates Tao with concepts like Qi, Yin and Yang, giving a fairly reasonable definition of the equal relationship between mankind and all things in nature. Its idea of “cause” is explained from the perspective of following ecological nature, “time” is advocated to follow the time law of natural creatures, and “limit” is put forward to abide by the law of moderation and the regulation of environmental protection. However, Jixia Taoist ecological philosophy cannot be directly applied to solve todays ecological problems, but needs creative transformation and innovative development.

Governance Dilemma and Implications of Mitten Crab Flooding in the River Thames of Britain

⊙Li Linkui & Han Jiabing

The invasion of alien species caused by human activities is one of the most important components of global environmental change. It has been more than 100 years since mitten crabs were officially declared to enter European waters. Due to the lack of natural enemies, rapid reproduction, strong mobility and difficulty in being widely consumed by the British and effectively controlled by the government because of serious pollution, mitten crabs have been proliferating, worsening the local environment and causing huge economic losses since 1935 when they were formally announced to be captured in the River Thames of Britain. Although the British government was early aware of the threat posed by mitten crabs to the environment of the Thames and has continuously introduced control measures since 1934, it has encountered numerous problems unsolved even today in the control process owing to the strong reproduction and fast migration of mitten crabs. The governance dilemma of mitten crab flooding in the River Thames of Britain implies that it is usually of little effect in governance of alien species only through government decision-making and that environmental governance cannot be separated from the strength of the masses.

The Practice and Experience of Garbage Classification in Beijing in the 1950s⊙Zhan Shigang

Beijing began to promote garbage classification in 1955 under the influence of the national efforts to build a country through diligence and thrift while facing the problems such as large garbage output, fast growth rate, unscientific garbage treatment methods, etc. After completing the preparatory work of establishing the organization and leadership, carrying out publicity work, solving the funding problem and investigating the experience of garbage classification in Shijiazhuang, Beijing propelled its own practice of garbage classification gradually from certain areas to the whole city. In the 1960s, due to the change of social atmosphere and lack of financial support to collect and utilize garbage, Beijing had to stop garbage classification temporarily. However, the pilot practice provides a valuable experience for the later efforts of publicity, for governmental organizations, enterprises and institutions to implement garbage classification, and for the combination of garbage classification and central work in the whole society.

Research Status Quo and Development Trend of Ecolinguistics: A Visualization Analysis Based on CiteSpace⊙Zhang Lan

In this paper, the research status quo, research hotspots and development trend of ecolinguistics are systematically analyzed with the help of CiteSpace, a software for visualization analysis, based on the Chinese and English literature on ecolinguistics collected by WOS and CNKI databases. The results are as follows:(1)The subjects of research in and out of China remain almost the same with unanimous focus on the theories of ecolinguistics, language ecology and discourse analysis and with exploration of the relationship and interaction between language and environment. (2)The research scopes are different at home and abroad. Domestic research belongs to the micro-ecolinguistics whose attention is paid more to the ecological potentiality and attributes of language in the field of linguistics, while the scope of international research is more extensive, and interdisciplinary intersection and integration have appeared. Especially, the empirical research combining landsenses ecology and ecolinguistics has practiced the research concept of new liberal arts, and thus become the research paradigm of macro-ecolinguistics. (3)The objects and contents of research in China and other countries have been under consistent expansion. The development trend of ecolinguistics is to combine the concepts and ideas of ecolinguistics with various disciplines in theoretical research and practice, and eventually apply them to all aspects of sustainable development of language and ecosystem.

On Application and Dissemination of Ecological Science Hotspots in Public Language

⊙Zhang Danqing

Ecological science provides systematic scientific solutions for the modern human society to resolve ecological crisis. The language of ecological science plays an important role in promoting and updating human understanding of the relationship between man and nature. Ecolinguistics intervenes language use behaviors of individuals and social groups through language research so as to build a harmonious relationship between man and nature. From the perspective of ecolinguistics, this paper uses CNKI and BCC corpora as data sources to track the application and dissemination of ecological science hotspots in social life. It is found in the research that the public use of ecological science keywords is characteristic of national policy dominance, limited scope of application and lack of scientific content.

An Analysis of Ecological Discourse on Animal Protection Based on Word Co-Occurrence Networks: A Case Study of Comments on a Cat Abuse Report on Weibo⊙Zeng Shuyu

Ecological discourse analysis is used as a tool to examine and interpret the discourse, so as to uncover the attitudes and mindsets from public opinions about animal protection posted on Weibo. This paper selects comments on Weibo on a cat abuse incident as a corpus to generate a word co-occurrence network, according to which “anti animal cruelty legislation”, “empathic communication”, “anthropocentrism” are three frames generalized as a basis of textual description for ecological discourse analysis. Furthermore, animal ethics orientations and their language characteristics in different frames are revealed. The following conclusions are drawn from the analysis of the socio-cultural practice of discourse: fighting animal cruelty is still the main public appeal; the increasing number of pet owners has made anti-cruelty to animals a hot topic in the public; the discourse conflicts in public opinion are caused by different animal ethical orientations.

Reflections on Perfecting Human-centered Discourse in Green Social Work in the Post-epidemic Era: A Content Analysis Based on Short Videos of Bilibili⊙Sun Xiaoyu

The COVID-19 pandemic has rung the alarm bell for mankind and prompted a rethink of the relationship between human and nature in social work. Green social work can play an important role in the post-epidemic ecological civilization construction. Through a content analysis of the epidemic-related social discourse produced by short videos of Bilibili, a video-sharing platform, this paper attempts to discuss what lessons social work can learn and what professional responsibilities it should take in the relationship between human and nature in the post-epidemic era. It is pointed out that with its own professional mission, social work needs to re-examine its important role in building a life community, produce new green discourse through actions to perfect the present human-centered discourse, and encourage the public to reflect on the relationship between human and nature in order to bring about corresponding social changes.
