China Makes Great Efforts to Reduce Carbon Emissions
2021-11-26
On September 22, 2020, China proposed to the world its targets to achieve a carbon peak before 2030 and carbon neutralization before 2060. This is the first long-term climate goal which has been set since China signed the Paris Agreement, and it is also the first time that carbon neutralization was mentioned in the goals. Accounting for 28% of the worlds total carbon emissions, China has been brave to set this ambitious target to reduce emissions. As a developing country, China plans to achieve carbon neutralization within 30 years after achieving its carbon peak in 2030. Such a challenging task has never before been set.
As the core policy tool for making this vision into reality, the construction of the national carbon market is making fast progress.
At the Leaders Summit on Climate which was held on April 22, 2021, China announced that it was opening up a national carbon trading market. The market was officially launched on July 16, with a trading volume of 4.1 million mt and a trading value of RMB 210 million on the first day of operation.
According to the Report of the Outlook on Chinas Green Energy (Clean Energy) Industry Market (hereinafter referred to as the report) issued by the Qianzhan Industry Research Institute, in 2021, the trade volume of Chinas carbon trading market is expected to reach 250 million mt, which is equivalent to a trad- ing value of RMB 6 billion.
Meanwhile, China has been attaching great importance to the development of new energy and renewable energy, and to the promotion of low-carbon energy consumption. Renewable energy will see a new phase of largescale, market-oriented and high-quality development. It is estimated that by 2025, Chinas installed capacity for renewable energy power generation will account for approximately 50% of the total installed capacity of power generation, and the annual power generation of renewable energy will account for more than 50% of the power consumption of the whole society. Chinas energy structure will be cleaner, more efficient and low-carbon.
