1. invention n. 发明;发明物

为可数名词，其动词为invent，意为“发明;创造”。

Could you please tell us about the four great inventions of China？ 你能告诉我们关于中国的四大发明吗？

The Chinese invented the compass. 中国人发明了指南针。

【辨析】 invent， discover / find， find out

invent指发明、创造原来不存在的东西，即平时说的“发明，创造”。

Edison invented the light bulb. 爱迪生发明了电灯。

discover / find 两者一般可以互换，但在表示科学上（如石油、星星、古迹、天文等）的发现时只能用discover。

He discovered a new planet. 他发现了一颗新的行星。

find out指通过观察、探索（努力）而发现事实的真相。

Please find out when the train leaves. 请弄清楚火车什么时候开。

2. progress v. 进步;进展

Medical science is progressing rapidly in our country. 我国医学进步迅速。

progress作不可数名词，意为“进步”。常用短语：make （good） progress （in...）意为“ （在……方面）取得（大的）进步”。

3. wonder v. 想知道

后接if或whether引导的宾语从句时，表委婉的请求或疑问。wonder后还可以接who， what， why， how much等引导的宾语从句或“疑问词+不定式”结构。wonder后接that引导的宾语从句时，表示“感到惊讶……”。

I wonder how much more computers will be able to do in the future. 我想知道将来计算机还能够做些什么事情。

He wondered what happened. 他想知道发生了什么事。

4. encourage v. 鼓励

可作表语和定语，它由名词“peace+后缀-ful”派生而来，副词形式为peacefully。
