NMET may be a new word to most. But if we put it “College Entrance Examination”, it will be familiar to most of us, who have had bone-biting experience and sweet memory of having had it and enjoying a relatively successful and full life.

NMET is the most important way of choosing wise heads both in history and at present. Maybe it is because its harder to invent a new way that NMET will still be playing an important part in the education in China. No matter how well you are doing and how good you are at your schooling, the last 3 or 4 days, the 7 sets of paper work and your final scores will give you the “final sentence”.

Those lucky ones would be enjoying the fruitful rewards while the other failed students would have to take in bitter and tearful results as if they had done nothing during the previous years. It is the same with their parents. Even worse, our society is now in the habit of making favorable judgment over those lucky ones without showing enough care to the failed ones. In this way those who failed are under pressure beyond their ability to bear, which will naturally lead to some tragedies after the public announcement of the NMET results.

I cant predict anything but I really wish all the NMET takers could get a satisfactory result. I call on more care from parents and the society about those who need our care. Though we have no way to have the system changed, we can still do something to change what we can change.

When one door closes, another window opens. So long as you are on the track and spare no effort, there should be a bright future not far ahead of you.

3. What makes matters worse for the failed ones according to Paragraph 3?

A. Lack of care.

B. Pressure from parents.

C. Worries about the future.

D. Favorable judgment over the lucky ones.

4. To whom does the author write the text?

A. Parents. B. Teachers.

C. Officials. D. Students.

With schools close in the UK during the COVID-19 outbreak, most children must be homeschooled. Parents have found themselves not only having to balance work and having the children at home but also having to try and teach them. How can you keep your children focused while learning?

Nicola Anderson—Head of Customer Support at the UKs leading online tutoring service MyTutor, provides tips to hearten parents at this difficult time and advises how they can structure their childrens days.

One is to keep to a regular timetable so it still feels like your child is taking part in the school day. Ms Anderson said, “Children of all ages do well on routine and boundaries; schools provide this in abundance and it will make most children feel secure and happy if they can follow a similar timetable for their homeschooling.”

Another tip is to create an environment which is favorable to learning. She said, “The environment should be free from distractions and ideally near to an open window, to provide them with appropriate levels of fresh air and natural light. Some children find it comfortable and helpful to have quiet, instrumental music playing in the background to help them to focus, but this isnt for everyone.”

Using technology to help with your childs learning is also advised. Many schools are offering online classes and resources to help and companies are reducing or even not charging their fees during this time.

It is also important to keep physical exercise as a part of your routine. Joe Wicks, otherwise known as The Body Coach, has been keeping kids healthy with daily 10-minute workouts for children on his Youtube channel. Ms Anderson said, “It can be anything from running around the garden, walking the dog, a game of football or dancing around your living room!”

D. Allowing children to adjust schedule freely.

8. What is the text mainly about?

A. How to improve homeschooling efficiency.

B. How to obtain online learning resources.

C. How to study attentively at home.

D. How to design a proper schedule.

Some individuals are born with a gift for public speaking. 1 Do you want to be a good public speaker? Here are some principles you must master.

People want to listen to someone who is interesting, relaxed and comfortable. Too often when you stand up to give a speech, you focus on the “public” at the expense of the “speaking”. 2 Focus on the “speaking”. Talk directly to your audience, be yourself and make a connection.

Even the most successful public speaker will make mistakes. Yet, the only one who cares about any mistake is the one who is speaking. Peoples attention wanders constantly. In fact, most people only absorb about 20 percent of a speakers message. So, dont stop speaking when you make a mistake unless its truly a serious one. 3

Your goal is not to be a perfect public speaker. 4And like everything else in life, that takes practice. Remember, even world champion athletes practice their skills on a consistent basis.

5 Its rare to hear someone say, “I wish that speaker had spoken longer.” On the other hand, you probably cant count the times that youve thought, “Im glad that talk is over. It seemed to go on forever!” So surprise your audience. Always make your presentation just a bit shorter than anticipated. Its better to leave your listeners wishing for more than shifting restlessly in their seats waiting for your speech finally to end.

A. Do the opposite.

B. You want to be an effective public speaker.

C. You dont need to apologize for a minor slip.

D. When it comes to public speaking, less is usually more.

E. The objective of most speeches is to benefit the audience.

F.Take the fear out of public speaking by focusing on your listeners.

G.However, the majority of people are effective speakers because they train to be.

1.                2.                3.                4.                5.

Advice to “sleep on it” could be well founded, scientists say. After a good nights sleep a problem that couldnt be solved the night before can often appear more manageable. Researchers at the University of Luebek in Germany have designed an experiment that shows a good nights sleep can improve insight (頓悟) and problem-solving ability.

“If you have some newly-got memories in your brain, sleep acts on these memories and restructures them, so that after sleep the insight increases,” said Dr Jan Born, a neuroscientist (神经科学家), at the university. To test the discovery, they taught volunteers two simple rules to help them turn a string of numbers into a new order. There was also a third, hidden rule, which could help them increase their speed in solving the problem. The researchers divided the volunteers into two groups: half were allowed to sleep after the training while the rest were forced to stay awake. Dr Jan Born and his team noticed that the group that had slept after the training were twice as likely to figure out the third rule as the other group. “Sleep helped,” Born said in a telephone interview. “The important thing is that you have to have a memory description of the problem you want to solve in your brain and then you sleep, so it can act on the problem.”

But Born admitted that he and his team dont know how restructuring of memories occurs or what controls it. Pierre Maquet and Perrine Ruby of the University of Liege in Belgium said the experimental evidence supports the suggestion that sleep can help develop creative thinking. Although the role of sleep in human creativity will still be a mystery, the research gives people good reasons to fully respect their periods of sleep, they added.

4. What is the purpose of the experiment?

A. To test problem-solving ability in sleep.

B. To discover peoples insight during sleep.

C. To discuss how to improve sleeping quality.

D. To prove a good sleep helps solve problems.

5. How did Jan Born and his team carry out the experiment?

A. Through comparison. B. Through imagination.

C. Through talks. D. Through interviews.

A. Sleep can help solve problems.

B. People should sleep as long as they want.

C. Different people have various periods of sleep.

D. Scientists know how sleep restructures memories.

7. What does the experimental evidence suggest?

A. It helps scientists control memories.

B. It explains the role of sleep in human.

C. It tells us the role of sleep is a mystery.

You might think people all over the United States have Wi-Fi—wireless Internet service—and mobile phones. But there is no such service in Green Bank, West Virginia, a tiny town four hours from the US capital, Washington DC. Fewer than 150 people live in Green Bank, which has two churches, an elementary school and a public library. It is also home to the largest radio telescope in the world.

There is a ban on Wi-Fi in Green Bank, along with anything else that can create electromagnetic (電磁的) waves. Officials say the waves could disturb the signals the telescope receives.

For many Americans, a visit to Green Bank is a little like returning to the 1950s. To get there, you must read road signs—because there is no GPS service in the town. People can connect with the Internet through telephones, but wireless service is not allowed.

The observatory (天文台) is one of the largest employers in the area. The federal National Science Foundation (NSF) spends about $8.2 million a year to operate the observatory, telescope and educational center.

Jonah Bauserman is a technician. If he supposes there is a signal that is not allowed in the zone, he drives to the house where the signal is coming from and checks it. But once a week, when the device is cleaned, some banned devices are allowed near it.

People in the town respect the work of the scientists. And they say they are happy to live without Wi-Fi and mobile phones. “You know, instead of sitting here on our phones and other devices were out fishing and hunting and going to each others houses.” Everyone knows each other and communication is almost always face-to-face.

1. What will you see when you pay a visit to Green Bank?

A. Guide posts. B. Cellphone towers.

C. GPS service. D. A radio-controlled library.

2. What is Jonah Bausermans duty in his work?

A. Following signals from cellphones.

B. Cleaning the telescope once a week.

C. Listening for signals from outer space.

D. Protecting the telescope from being affected.

3. What is the attitude of the local people towards the telescope?

A. Reserved. B. Favorable.

C. Disapproving. D. Unconcerned.

4. What can be the best title for the text?

A. A Better Life Without Wireless Devices

B. The Largest Radio Telescope in the World

C. An American Town Without Wi-Fi and Mobile Phones

D. Good Relationships Between People in an American Town

Much of the public debate around early childhood education comes down to which matters more: academics or play. Thats a false dilemma. Play is really the way that young children learn and guided play is the key. Its a way that they experience the world, and it helps them learn more deeply.

We should be concerned that the “skill and drill” approach to teaching academics is most frequently used in classrooms serving at-risk preschoolers, in an attempt to close the gap on school readiness. Unfortunately, these teaching methods can turn young kids off to school and introduces the possibility of shame and anxiety. “Skill and drill” doesnt teach kids the curiosity and critical thinking skills that they need to develop in early childhood.

However, pure free play—an approach advocated more frequently by wealthier groups—also misses the mark. “I hear a lot about just ‘free play classrooms,” Suzanne Bouffard, an education researcher said. if it only involves setting out materials and not thinking about learning goals, theres a real missed opportunity. For example, she said, researchers have found that children used more complex language about building activities when they had a goal in mind.

What effective preschools aim for is “guided play”, in which adults create a purposeful play environment that encourages students to explore. For example, in setting up blocks, a teacher might put up pictures of buildings to inspire kids. They may ask students, “What are you doing?” and gently push kids thinking by offering new information.

Of course, the ability to find this balance rests with teachers. Good teachers make it look really easy. Thats why its really important that we invest in teachers and give them the training to guide play without overly controlling it and to encourage kids to develop an understanding of letters and numbers without “skill and drill”.
