If the day is done，

If birds sing no more，

If the wind has flagged tired，

Then draw the veil of darkness thick upon me，

Even as thou hast wrapt the earth

with the coverlet of sleep

And tenderly closed the petals of the drooping lotus at dusk.

From the traveler，

Whose sack of provisions is empty before the voyage is ended，

Whose garment is torn and dustladen，

Whose strength is exhausted，

Remove shame and poverty，

And renew his life like a flower

under the cover of thy kindly night.

1861年5月7日，拉宾德拉纳特·泰戈尔出生在印度一个富有的贵族家庭，13岁即能创作长诗和颂歌体诗集。1913年，他以《吉檀迦利》成为第一位获得诺贝尔文学奖的亚洲人。本诗是泰戈尔经典的英语诗之一，诗中并没有太多华丽的辞藻，用叙事的手法，通过平凡的语调描绘出一幕静谧、安逸的场景，平凡却并不枯燥。
