第二部分  閱读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

With over 2.4 million visitors every year, Cinque Terre is one of the most-visited regions in Italy. Cinque Terre is truly special. The five candy-colored fishing villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare are built into cliffs over the clean and brightly-shining Ligurian Sea. Whether youre visiting the region for a few days or a few weeks, these are the experiences you should add to your trip pleasure.

· Take a scenic like.

Its easy to visit each of the attractive villages on foot. The most popular hike is the coastal path Sentiero Azzurro. It links all five villages and offers extremely beautiful scenery of the sea, architecture and vineyards. It takes about six hours to go across, with short breaks, but most people are going to stop in the villages for food and swimming.

· Eat seafood in a cone (锥形蛋筒卷).

Dessert lovers might think that Italian ice-cream is the best thing to be served in a cone but make room for seafood cones as well. Thanks to its coastal location, Cinque Terre is full of seafood restaurants.

· Get on a boat.

If the weather cooperates, take the time to get out on the water. The villages look very beautiful from a boat. The cheapest and easiest way is to jump on the public ferry (渡船) from one of the villages to the next, but these boats are often crowded. Its far more relaxing to take a private cruise, which departs (出发) from the docks in Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare.

· Take the train.

Cinque Terres train system is one of the most scenic in Europe. The high-speed train runs through each of the five villages every 20 minutes or so. And the whole line is directly on the coast, offering lovely views of the Ligurian Sea and rocky cliffs.

21. What is special about the five candy-colored fishing villages?

A. Their foods. B. Their history. C. Their location. D. Their villagers.

22. What is the favourite food for the hikers in the five villages?

A. Italian wines. B. Seafood cones. C. Italian noodles.    D. Italian ice-cream.

23. What is the best way to enjoy both the beautiful scenery and the delicious food?

A. Riding a bicycle. B. Taking a boat or private ferry.

C. Walking with stops in the villages. D. Taking a train running through the villages.

B

The other day I heard a few local musicians talking:

“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They cant even understand a bit of music.”

“Im never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”

But one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and Im trying to find other places to play. Im also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”

Ive heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.

Attitudes are important. Whether theyre positive or negative, theyre rubbing off on you. If youre around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame (責怪) others, and you play the role of victim, chances are that you will start to as well. So its time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.

This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard for yourself and dont become friends with people who fall below that standard.

Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work youre looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.

24. What does the author mainly want to say by talking about the musicians at the beginning?

A. People have poor taste in music. B. The musicians living conditions are quite poor.

C. Young people have greater chances to succeed. D. People have different attitudes towards the same thing.

25. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?

A. Theyll help you achieve your goal. B. Theyll cover your disadvantages.

C. Theyll push you ahead. D. Theyll influence you.

26. What can you achieve by taking the exercise mentioned in Paragraph 7?

A. Improving a lot in making more friends. B. Going to the right way of making friends.

C. Arranging the time properly with your friends. D. Developing a better relationship with your friends.

27. What can be the best title for this passage?

A. You Are Who Your Friends Are B. A Friend in Need Is a Friend Indeed

C. Your Friendship Will Last Forever D. Friends Are the Most Important in Ones Success

C

Personality is, to large extent, inherent (天生的). A-type parents usually bring about A-type offspring (子女). But the environment must also have a big effect, since if competition is important to the parents, it is likely to become a major factor in the lives of their children.

One place where children soak up A-characteristics is school, which is, by its very nature, a highly competitive institution. Too many schools adopt the “win-at-all-costs” moral standard and measure their success by sporting achievements. The current passion for making children compete against their classmates or against the clock produces a two-layer system, in which competitive A-types seem in some way better than their B-type fellows. Being too keen (熱切) to win can have dangerous consequences: remember that Pheidippides, the first marathon runner, dropped dead seconds after saying, “Rejoice, we conquer!”

By far the worst form of competition in school is the improper emphasis on examinations. It is a rare school that allows pupils to concentrate on those things they do well. The merits of competition by examinations are somewhat questionable, but competition in the certain knowledge of failure is positively harmful.

Obviously, it is neither practical nor desirable that all A-youngsters change into ‘Bs. The world needs types, and schools have an important duty to try to fit a childs personality to his possible future employment. It is top management.

28. What affects the building of personality according to the passage?

A. Inheritance, employment and examination. B. Inheritance, competition and environment.

C. Environment, knowledge and examination. D. Competition, employment and questions.

29. Why does the author give the example of Pheidippides?

A. To express his approval for the competition. B. To show that he was too keen to win the game.

C. To show the consequence of the serious competition. D. To express his attitude toward the examinations.

30. What is authors attitude toward examinations in schools?

A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Acceptable.

31. What suggestion does the author make concerning the management of schools?

A. A childs personality should be considered in regard to his possible future job.

B. Students should be made into competitive A-types.

C. Students should be changed into B characteristics.

D. Schools should give up examinations.

D

After years of research and testing, the hybrid car was developed and put on the market. Its an interesting and exciting new improvement in todays world as we look for better ways to protect the quality of the air we breathe and protect our natural resources.

The quality of our air is affected by many different things. But one of the largest sources of air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline which are used to power a cars engine. The EPA has set national standards to help control the level of harmful pollutants sent off into the air, and the automobile industry has acted by producing a hybrid car that uses less gas and therefore causes less pollution.

A hybrid car is a combination of a regular car that runs on gasoline and an electric car that is battery-powered. Some people tend to think that since the hybrid car is partly electric, you have to plug (插入) it in to charge it. But thats not how it works. The 144-volt battery pack is actually recharged (再充電) through the energy that is produced when the cars brakes are used. This is referred to as “regenerative braking”, because it generates electricity.

Although the hybrid car still runs on gasoline most of the time, this helps it use less gas than a regular car. When the driver stops at a traffic light, the engine automatically (自动地) shuts off to save fuel. Then, as soon as the driver puts the car in gear and touches the gas pedal, the engine starts back up.

Have you ever ridden in a car with someone who ran out of gas? That probably wouldnt happen if you were riding in a hybrid car. It flashes a warning on its computer screen that says, “I am low on gas.” When it completely runs out, the warning reads, “YOU ARE NOW OUT OF GAS!” Then the electric power supply kicks in to let the driver travel a few more miles to a gas station.

32. What can we know about the EPA from Paragraph 2?

A. It designed hybrid cars.

B. It outlawed the burning of fossil fuels.

C. It set important guidelines that help control pollution.

D. Its main purpose is to protect endangered plants and animals.

33. What is the advantage of regenerative braking?

A. It allows the car to come to a quick stop. B. It produces energy to charge the battery.

C. It gives the driver a smoother ride. D. It can control the speed of the car.

34. What is the reason for developing hybrid cars?

A. They cost less. B. They use less gas.

C. Theyre safer to drive. D. Theyre more modern.

35. Which of the following is TRUE about a hybrid car?

A. It will be put on the market.

B. It runs faster than regular cars.

C. It runs both on gas and electric power.

D. When it stops at a traffic light, the driver will get a warning.

People know the dangers of fires. Its good for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. Here are some suggestions:

Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off.        36        The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.

Make escape plans. You should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.

Buy fire extinguishers (灭火器) in the house.        37

Practice for a fire at home now and then because it can teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules:

★        38        The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door.

★ Stay close to the floor!        39        The best air is near the floor because smoke rises.

★ What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn? First, stop!        40        The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop! Fall to the floor. Then roll! Turning over and over will make the fire go out. Put a blanket around you to keep air away from the fire that may still be on you.

There are many possible causes of fires. A wise family is ready all the time. If there is a fire, dont forget to call 119 for help.

A. Dont run!

B. Open the windows!

C. Dont open a hot door!

D. The alarm makes a loud sound.
