Making Use of Facilitative Teaching and CLT in SeniorMiddle School English Courses in China

【Abstract】This paper studies the necessity and rationales of the application of facilitative teaching and CLT English teaching in China and also the difficulties to di that by analyzing the current situation of English teaching in China.

I. Introduction

Facilitative teaching techniques could help students not only learn the knowledge on textbooks but also help them know how to learn English by themselves. As teachers could not around students all the time, so the ability to learn by themselves is very important and necessary.

II. The Necessity and Rationales of the Application of Facilitative Teaching and CLT

As a English teacher, no one could teach students everywhere and every time, so it is more important to teach student the way to learning, as a saying goes: “Give a person a fish and he will eat fir a day, teach a person how to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life.”

Facilitative teaching techniques and CLT could help students not only learn the knowledge on textbooks but also help them know how to learn English by themselves. As teachers could not around students all the time, so the ability to learn by themselves is very important and necessary. In recent years, educational innovations in English education have received considerable attention in China. The textbooks for senior high school students have become more communicative. In the new curriculum, the goal of English teaching is to develop the learners communicative competence through meaningful drills and communicative activities. The Administers of Education are trying their efforts to provide more opportunities for English teachers to training and retraining. And added more speaking test in China to force students to practice speaking ability. More and more changes are made for English teaching and learning, therefore, it is very possible to apply facilitative way of teaching and CLT in China.

III. The Application of Facilitative Teaching and CLT

Facilitative teaching and CLT are used in many schools and have good achievements. In order to make full use of facilitative teaching and CLT in Chinese English classes, there should be some changes. On the one hand, the class size is really large in china. Such a large learning population makes the learner-centered teaching difficult, and it is hard to assess students productive skills. On the other hand, examination system in China is really popular, students should take a lot of exams to show their learning outcomes. As for English, I think the speaking exam should be added into the College Entrance Examination, in this way students will pay more attention on speaking and will help them to improve their communicative competence.

The typical characteristic of facilitative teaching is learner-centered teaching. Teachers should lead students to figure problems out on their own instead of telling them directly, and should choose materials based on students needs and their background knowledge. As a saying goes: “Interest is the best teacher.” The important thing that teachers should do is do motivate students learning interests. Also, there are so many principle, such as meaningful learning, the anticipation of reward, intrinsic motivation, communicative competence and so on. If teachers could use these principles well, their students will have more interest to learning, and then, they will learn English happily and effectively. Teachers should make more activities based on communicative competence, let students have more opportunity to talk with classmates and speak their ideas out, if possible, there should be native speakers to teach them the right pronunciation of the English words. But the ability to speak is more important than accuracy.

IV. Conclusion

Facilitative teaching and CLT have gain more and more attention in China now. They are very useful to help students develop their communicative competence. There are so many principles and techniques could be used in language teaching. But there is still some difficulties, so teachers should make great efforts in order to make use of facilitative teaching and CLT. And to improve their own ability in order to catch the development of the society.
