Last Monday, Fred had to go to London. It was his first time there, and he didnt know his way around city. He had a meeting at 10 oclock, and he wanted to be on time. The meeting was in the Mayflower Building in the 21st Street, but Fred didnt know where it was. Seeing two men passing by, he asked them.

“Excuse me,” he said, “but can you tell me how to get to the Mayflower Building in the 21st Street?”

“Sure,” answered one of them. “You can get there in ten minutes. Go to the third corner and turn left. Walk three blocks and there you are.”

But the other man said, “Theres a better way. Get a bus here at the corner. It stops right near the May Day Building.”

“Not May Day,” Fred told him, “Mayflower.”

Then the first man said, “Oh, thats in the East 21st Street, not the West 21st. Its quite far from here. You will have to take the subway (地鐵).”

But the second man told Fred, “No, dont go by subway. Take the cross-town (穿城而过) bus. It goes to the May Day Building.”

“Mayflower, not May Day,” Fred was getting worried. It was almost ten oclock. “Thanks a lot,” he said. “I think Ill take a taxi.”

I went home one Saturday afternoon in the autumn of 1993 to get some work done in the garden. While sweeping leaves on the ground, my five■year■old son Nick came over and asked me to write something on a piece of paper to make a sign for him.

“What for?” I asked.

“Im going to sell some of my stones (石头),” he answered.

Nick was fascinated with stones and had collected many stones from all over. “Im too busy to do that for you. Go and ask your mum for help,” I said.

A short time later, Nick returned with a sign, reading, “Stones One Dollar Each”. He took the sign, a small chair and 4 of his best stones and walked to the road in front of our garden. There he put the stones in a line and sat down on the chair.

After half an hour, nobody passed by. I walked to him and asked him to go back, but he didnt.

Another half hour later, a small car came down the road. I watched as Nick stood up, holding his sign up. A woman rolled down (搖下) a window and read the sign. I couldnt hear their talk, but I saw the woman turn to the driver and the man reach for his pocket.

I sat in the yard, as Nick ran to me. Waving the dollar, he shouted, “I told you I could sell one stone for a dollar—if you believe in yourself, you can do anything.”
