Located in Tropical North Queensland, Cairns Convention Centre is located conveniently in the city of Cairns. Featuring sustainability and visitor experiences, the venue has won many awards and hosted major events.

Please kindly introduce the facilities and major events (have or will be) held in Cairns Convention Centre.

Janet: The Cairns Convention Centre is ideal for meetings and conferences from 300– 2,500 delegates. It has a total of 22 flexible halls and meeting rooms and received the AIPC award for Worlds Best Congress Centre in 2014 and 2004.

The Centre has been the proud hosts of the following events: G20 Finance Ministers & Central Bank Governors Meeting, APEC Senior Officials Meeting & Ministers Responsible for Trade, World Buiatrics Congress, AMWAY Korea Leadership Seminars.

Some future events confirmed for Cairns Convention Centre include: Congress of International Plant Molecular Biology, 12th Congress of International Society for Autonomic Neuroscience, International Society of Toxinology Conference, Bell Helicopter M&O Conference.

What do you think are the unique features of Cair ns as a MICE destination? Does local government or convention bureau have some supporting policies, especially for Chinese business travelers?

Janet: Cairns has excellent business events infrastructure: International airport only 7 kilometers from the city center, 7,000 hotel rooms from budget to 5 star, Excellent locally grown produce, Cairns is the only place in the world where two World Heritage areas meet, Exciting offsite venues for banquet functions, Authentic indigenous cultural experiences, 600 tours per day to the Reef, Rainforest, Outback, islands and farmland surrounding Cairns. Besides, Cairns has well developed infrastructure for hosting Chinese guests with menus, tours etc all available in Chinese language.

How do you notice the changes in event organizers in recent years? How does Cairns Convention Centre stay relevant to customer needs? How about the use of technology for creating memorable events?

Janet: Organisers are looking for more creative meeting spaces, healthier food and greater connectivity. Experiences and wellness feature frequently in conference programs. The Cairns Convention Centres on site experts and equipment can be customized to deliver the most exciting and captivating guest experiences.

How do you think of the status quo and future of sustainability (green MICE) in the industry? What are your venues practices in green exhibitions?

Janet: Sustainability is an important component of meetings and it is expected that venues will do whatever possible to assist organizer to deliver sustainable events. The Cairns Convention Centre was the first sustainable public building opened in Australia and has won many awards for its energy and conservation features. The Centre has a range of ways to reduce its impact on the environment through rain water storage, solar hot water, shading devices etc.

What is the role of the Chinese market for your business development? What is your cooperation plan with the Chinese MICE industry?

Janet: The Cairns Convention Centre wishes to attract incentive and corporate events from the Chinese market. We also work with our partners, Tourism Australia, Tourism Queensland and Tourism Tropical North Queensland to assist with planning and delivering events for the Chinese market.
