加拿大国土面积很大，非常大，就连它的名字也很“大”。它的国土面积居世界第二，人口却不足中国的一个省份。

加拿大是一个移民国家，只有四百来年的历史，但它的美是世界公认的。街道旁，公园里，山峦上，峡谷中，色彩缤纷的枫叶飞舞，欢迎着世界各地的朋友们。

“枫叶”和“白雪”可能是最能代表加拿大的标识。因此，从小生活在寒冷的枫叶国，加拿大人习惯了冰天雪地。零下10度对他们来说，根本不叫冷；零下20度可以称之为“cold”；而零下30度，他们才会耸耸肩说“freezing”。

本期“大千世界”，我们一起走进美丽的枫叶之国——加拿大。

Canada is famous for being “the Maple1 Country”.

Sugar maple is the national tree of Canada. And maple leaves that grow on the maple trees， are the typical symbol of Canada. The symbol is on Canadian national flags， and on most Canadian-style logos. When people see the red maple leaf， they are probably thinking of Canada.

According to many historians2， the maple leaf began to serve as a Canadian symbol as early as 1700. Long before the first European explorers went to Canada， Canadas aboriginal（土著）peoples had discovered the tasty treat of maple sap3， which they gathered every spring. With years passing by， the maple leaf started to appear on decorations， in books and Canadian coins. And since 1965， the big red maple leaf has been the center of the Canadian flag. Maple leaf pins and badges4（别针和徽章） are worn by Canadians almost everywhere they go. In 1996， the maple tree was officially the national symbol of Canada.

Today， maples are still valuable wood products. They sustain5 the maple sugar industry and beautify Canada.

加拿大素有“枫叶之国”的美誉。

糖枫是加拿大的国树。长在枫树之上极具特色的枫叶，则是加拿大的象征。不仅加拿大国旗上有枫叶，各种加拿大风格的图标上，枫叶也比比皆是。人们一看到枫叶，自然就会想到加拿大这个国家。

据历史学家们研究，早在1700年，枫叶就作为加拿大的标志而存在了。在欧洲人到访加拿大之前，当地土著就已经发现枫树汁液的美味之处，于是每年春天都会进行采集。随着时间流逝，枫叶开始出现在装饰品上、相关书目中，最终登上了加拿大硬币。自1965年起，加拿大国旗正中央就绘上了巨大的红色枫叶图案。不管加拿大人去哪里，他们都会佩戴枫叶徽章、纪念章等。1996年，加拿大正式將枫叶定为国家的象征。

直到今天，枫树仍然是高级木制品原材料。它们支撑着枫糖产业，也让加拿大变得更加美丽。
