Theres a good chance that something youve bought online has been in the hands of a “picker” first. These are the workers in warehouses who pick, pack and ship all those things were ordering.

At Amazon and other companies, theyre working side by side with robots. Experts say while the robots are replacing some human workers, the machines arent quite ready to take over completely.

When a robot finds its storage unit, it slides underneath, lifts it up and then delivers it to a worker—theyre called pickers. On a recent day, the computer told a picker to grab what looked like a fantasy board game. The picker found it, scanned it and placed it on the conveyor (傳输机) belt.

“In a traditional fulfillment center (订单履行中心) where the associate would walk to the different items, it can take hours to fulfill a customer order,” Robinson says.

Now, with the help of robots, that task takes minutes and fewer humans.

So is this a sign were entering a new industrial revolution?

“Its definitely going to take over a lot of jobs,” says Karen Myers, a scientist at SRI, one of Silicon Valleys oldest research centers.

At the same time, she says, were running against the limits of technology. Take “the picker” at the Amazon fulfillment center. Myers says those skills are proving to be uniquely human.

“Our fingers are unbelievably agile and the current generation of robotic operators—theyre getting much, much better,” she says. “But theyre just not quite there yet.”

Technologists say that, increasingly, humans will work side by side with robots instead of robots working alone.

Amazon says robots and humans enabled the Tracy Warehouse to fulfill customer orders faster. That means more customers and more human workers.

Louis Pasteur, the famous French chemist and bacteriologist, invented “pasteurization”. In 1854 Pasteur was made head of the department of science at the University of Lille, and it was there that he made one of his most famous discoveries. Lille was a major center for wine and beer-making, and some of the local wine-makers asked Pasteur if he could help solve the problem of keeping wine fresh. At that time, it was believed that food and drinks go “bad” due to a purely chemical process. But during a series of experiments Pasteur proved that tiny living organisms (微生物) caused food and drinks to go bad. In the case of wine and beer the organisms are already present in the form of the various yeasts (酵母) that caused the fermentation (發酵) process. Pasteur discovered that heating the wine gently for a few minutes after it had fermented would kill off the yeast that was left in the wine, with the result that the wine would remain fresh for much longer. He also proved that food and drinks could be turned bad by other organisms that were present in the air, and that they too would keep fresh much longer if they were kept in airtight containers.

The heating process was so successful that it made Pasteur famous. It was named “pasteurization” in his honor, and by about 1900 it had been widely used for processing and bottling cows milk. The result was a huge drop in the number of bottle-fed babies dying from infant diarrhea and from that time on it has been a standard treatment for milk and many other food products. This simple process has saved thousands, possibly millions, of lives worldwide.

Or job searchers can look in the newspaper. Local newspapers have employment announcements placed by companies seeking workers.

Another popular tool for finding jobs is the Internet. For example, people in four hundred and fifty cities around the world can use the Craigslist website to buy objects, meet people or find a job. Craigslist says that it receives two million new job listings each month.

Another useful way to find a job is through a college or university. For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Center to get help in finding a job. Of course, looking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do. For example, there is a book called What Color is Your Parachute (降落傘)? by Richard Bolles. This book has been helping people choose a career since it was first published in 1970.

Some experts also help people find jobs. Susan W. Miller owns a company called California Career Services in Los Angeles. Should parents talk to a dying child about death? The answer is “Yes”, according to a Swedish study. They had given the question to 368 parents whose children had died of cancer. About 123 parents said they had talked to their children about death. Almost two thirds of those didnt think they should.

“The most important thing is that no parents were sorry for talking about death with their children,” said the researchers.

So many experts encourage parents to talk about death with their dying children because they believe it helps the children. Most parents listened to the new study and agreed to do it. Dr Lawrence Wolfe, a child cancer doctor in Boston, said the study would help doctors guide parents who were not sure if they should talk about death with their children. “I believe that even very young children know that something very serious is happening,” he said. “Mystery is usually worse than the truth.”

Mrs Souza said she was frightened when Dr Wolfe said that her daughter Jackie should know that she was dying of cancer. “Youre joking. How do you tell a 16-year-old girl, who has tried every day to get well, that we are giving her up?” But Mrs Souza said she did not feel sorry for what she did. When Jackie knew that she had only four days to live, she asked to spend money on toys instead of giving her treatment. “Her memory just kept living on because she told us exactly what to do and how to do it,” she said. “If we hadnt told her, she would never have said any of that.”

33. Which country carried out the study most probably?

A. America. B. Canada. C. Japan. D. Sweden.

34. How many of the 368 parents did not tell their children about death according to Paragraph 1?

A. About 122. B. About 123. C. About 245. D. About 368.
