School was out and summer officially began. Many teens traded their books for bathing suits and headed to the beach. I spent my summer working.

Being a camp adviser is tiring but rewarding. In past summers, I watched the kids come and go week after week, received my paychecks, and said goodbye. That is the normal routine. But this year, one child stood out. His name was Matthew, a 10-year-old who lived in darkness. Matthew was blind.

I had been both expecting and dreading (惧怕) the first day of the camp. Who wanted to work anyway? I greeted the kids, and told them some rules. At first, I couldnt tell which one was Matthew. Later I introduced myself.

“Hi, Im Greg. Whats your name?” I asked.

“Matthew Howell, but not like a dog howls!” he joked.

The summer progressed, and Matthew and I felt like wed known each other forever. He often told me that he wished we were brothers. We talked about his favorite sports, music, and activities. He had a great imagination, and he would sing for the other kids while they cheered him on.

I sat on the bench on the last day of the camp and my college life would soon come up. A 10-year-old gave me advice when I expressed my worries. “Dont give up. Youve got nothing to stop you,” he laughed.

Then it hit me. It took me eight weeks to realize what I did at that moment. Imagine the view of a city skyline with the sun beaming through, or a field of flowers blooming in spring. Matthew was robbed of all these, but he could still make 12 kids at camp laugh. I learned to stop holding myself back and capture my goals, no matter how far-fetched they might seem. We helped each other a lot that summer. A summer I will never forget—the summer I met Matthew.

4. We can learn from the text that the author ____ .

A. had known Matthew before the camp B. spent his summer holidays working

C. was eager to go back to college D. hated being a camp adviser

5. Why was the author afraid of the first day of the camp?

A. He didnt know how to take care of the blind. B. He didnt like the kids.

6. We can infer from the text that Matthew ____ .

A. was made fun of at camp B. was encouraged by many people at camp

C. was a blind boy who was lonely D. brought much pleasure to others at camp

7. Why does the author never forget the summer?

A. He learned a lot from Matthew. B. He had a lot of fun at camp.

C. He and Matthew had much in common. D. He got a very rewarding job.

One of the last West Coast homes of the Monarch butterfly, a type of insect, may soon disappear. Strangely, it is in a town that calls itself Butterfly USA, Pacific Grove, California.

The town of Pacific Grove loves the butterflies. Every year they have a parade and hundreds of children dress up as butterflies. Monarch butterflies are the town mascot. Tourism is very important, and many people come to see the butterflies. The butterflies are good for the development of the town.

In 1981 there were so many butterflies that it looked like it was raining butterflies. Tens of thousands of Monarchs stayed on tree branches near Pacific Grove. Now there are not so many. The building goes on a little bit at a time, and you dont notice it day by day. Over time, you can see that there has been a lot of development. As new buildings go up, many trees are cut down. This reduces the natural homes for the butterflies.

Monarchs travel hundreds of miles each year, returning to the same woods, often to the same trees. The female Monarchs need milkweed to lay their eggs; the males will follow the females.

Millions of Monarchs have traveled regularly along the same path for thousands of years. They start their trip in the mountains of Mexico and travel to the middle part of America. If the woods where the butterflies live are destroyed, the whole species could be lost. There have been Monarch butterflies along the coast of California for as long as man can remember, but no one is sure how much longer they will last.

8. Why are Monarch butterflies important to Pacific Grove?

A. They may disappear soon. B. They give a name to Pacific Grove.

C. They help develop the towns tourism. D. They brought happiness to many children.

9. The underlined word “mascot” in Paragraph 2 probably refers to “____”.

A. a new type of butterfly B. an animal believed to bring good luck

C. a parade organized by Pacific Grove D. a special dress for children in Pacific Grove

10. What problem do Monarch butterflies face now?

A. New buildings take up their living space. B. There has been too much rain in recent years.

C. Their natural homes are destroyed by tourism. D. They have to travel a long distance to get home.

11. Where do Monarch butterflies start their trip to Pacific Grove?

A. Central America. B. The West Coast.

C. California. D. Mexico.

Increasing numbers of airports, especially in Europe, are promoting a “silent airport” idea. It is to reduce noise pollution, such as airport-wide announcements, without sacrificing timely and helpful updates of information.

International airports were once characterized by their high voices, competing gate announcements and so on. This is all changing. Angela Gittens, director general of Airports Council International (ACI), says there is a growing desire among airports and airlines they serve to “create a calm, relaxed atmosphere” without being disturbed by announcements.

“Passengers can relax while they wait for their flight to board in the common airside lounges(休閑区), and food and drink areas,” she says.

In June, Helsinki Airport in Finland—a country where the tourism slogan is “Silence, Please” —became the most recent airport to adopt the silent concept. As part of its commitment to quieting things down, announcements for flights are made only in boarding gate areas.

Lost track of time in the shop?

Too bad.

Nobodys going to call you to your flight, as announcements in all terminals will be made only in exceptional emergency circumstances.

Heikki Koski, vice president of Helsinki Airport, says that improved flight information display systems and interactive kiosks(交互式自助服务机), together with advances in mobile technology, are changing the way airports communicate with passengers. At Munich Airport, InfoGate kiosks allow for video-based, face-to-face conversation with a live customer service representative in the travelers language of choice. Interactive signs, on the other hand, give directions at the touch of finger. Passengers can tap a “you are here” display to get directions and approximate walking times to their destinations.

Of course, an airport will never be as silent as a temple. There will continue to be a need for airport-wide emergency announcements, along with boarding calls. But at silent airports, the latter can be restricted to specific gates, as has been adopted in Helsinki.

12. What is Angela Gittens opinion on the silent airport concept?

A. It makes airport noise-free. B. It is intended for passengers benefit.

C. It has changed international airports reputation. D. It has encouraged the catering industry in airports.

13. What should passengers pay close attention to at Helsinki Airport?

A. Their boarding time. B. Finlands tourism slogan.

C. The shops opening hours. D. The “you are here” display.

14. Why is Munich Airport mentioned in the text?

A. To show its popularity. B. To introduce InfoGate kiosks.

C. To prove Heikki Koskis words. D. To be compared with Helsinki Airport.

15. What is the best title for the text?

A. Silence at an Airport B. Can Airports Be As Quiet As Temples?

C. Silent Airports All Around the World D. Technology Helps Airports Become Interactive

Perhaps the most famous theory, the study of body movement, was suggested by Professor Ray Birdwhistell. He believes that physical appearance is often culturally programmed. In other words, we learn our looks—we are not born with them. A baby has generally unformed face features. A baby, according to Birdwhistell, learns where to set the eyebrows by looking at those around—family and friends. This helps explain why the people of some areas of the United States look so much alike. New Englanders or Southerners have certain common face features that cannot be explained by genetics. The exact shape of the mouth is not set at birth, it is learned after. In fact, the final mouth shape is not formed well until new teeth are set. For many, this can be well into grown-ups. A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look somewhat alike. We learn our looks from those around us. This is perhaps why in a single country there are areas where people smile more than those in other areas. In the United States, for example, the South is the part of the country where the people smile most frequently. In New England they smile less, and in the western part of New York State still less. Many Southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendly, partly because people on Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. People in largely populated areas also smile and greet each other less in public than people do in small towns.

It was a normal school day for senior Solymar Solis until an unexpected visitor arrived. Her dad, Sgt. Carlos Solis Melendez, surprised her by coming home early from Kuwait and visiting her unannounced at Spring Valley High School in South Carolina.

After serving in Kuwait for nine months, Melendez returned home a week earlier than his daughter expected. He held balloons and flowers in a classroom as he sat at a students desk to blend in with the crowd. “It came across my mind like, ‘How is she going to react?,” he recalled the heart-warming moment. “Is she going to be happy and run to me and hug me, or cry? That was all going on through my mind.”

As unsuspecting Solymar entered the classroom, she sat down and took out her books. But at the sight of her father, she was soon overcome with emotion, immediately bursting into tears and covering her mouth. She didnt talk. She was just crying. She was overwhelmed with everything. She thought it was a dream.

Melendez was a single parent so while he was deployed(調动), he got his sister to live with his daughter. When he was coming back and talking to his sister, both of them came to the conclusion that they should do something special for his daughter. Melendez and his sister got in touch with the school, and they planned the whole being-in-the-classroom thing, and it turned out perfect.

The two are very much looking forward to some good daddy-daughter time now that hes home. “It means everything,” Melendez said of being able to surprise his daughter this way. “After all the sacrifices shes made, she deserves all the special arrangements and special occasions and celebrations. There is a story about British poet Samuel Coleridge. He was writing a poem when he was interrupted by a knock at the door. That was an age before telephones. Someone was delivering a message. When Coleridge got back to his poem, he had lost his inspiration. His poetic mood had been broken by the knock on his door. His unfinished poem, which could otherwise have been a masterpiece, would now never be more than a fragment (片段). This story tells us how unexpected communication can destroy an important thought, which brings us to the cell phone.

We have already entered a golden age of little white lies about our cell phones, and this is actually a healthy, protective development. “I didnt hear it ring” or “I didnt realize my phone had shut off” are among the lies that we tell to give ourselves space where were beyond reach. In fact, we have “Do Not Disturb” signs on the doors of hotel rooms, so why must we feel guilty when it comes to cell phones? Why must we apologize if we decide to shut off the phone for a while?

Cell phones make long-distance communication common, but also endanger our time. Now, time alone or a conversation with someone next to us without being interrupted by a phone is something to be cherished. Sometimes, even cell phone devotees (愛好者), myself usually included, cant help wanting to throw their phones away.

But we dont and wont, and there is really no need. We have to develop a healthy contempt (轻视) for the rings of our own phones. Ease yourself of making and receiving cell phone calls. If we dont talk to the caller right now, we surely will shortly later. A cell phone call deserves no greater priority than a random word from the person next to us. The call on my cell phone may be the one-in-a-million from Steven Spielberg, who has finally read my novel and wants to make it his next movie, but most likely it is not, so Id better think about the idea that I just had for a new story, or the slice of pizza Ill eat for lunch.

12. The writer tells the story in Paragraph 1 to ____ .

A. direct readers attention to the main topic B. show how important inspiration is to a poet

C. encourage readers to read the works of the poet D. emphasize the disadvantage of not having a cell phone

13. The writer thinks telling “white lies” on the cell phones is ____ .

A. a way to show you dont like the caller B. natural for us to keep secret

C. basically a good way to protect ones privacy D. something we should feel guilty about

14. According to the text, whats the most annoying problem caused by cell phones?

A. Phone calls interrupt peoples private time.

B. People always cant help making phone calls.

C. Cell phone radiation is harmful to the human body.

D. People feel guilty when they cant answer the cell phones.

15. What does the last paragraph suggest?

A. We sometimes throw the phone away when it is too disturbing.

B. Never let cell phones interfere too much with your life.

C. Coleridge once called to talk about the authors novel.

D. Cell phones brought us so much convenience.

It was Thanksgiving morning. I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling (蜷縮) together on the top step.

“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.

I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals (凉鞋), wet with heavy snow.

“Come in and Ill make you a cup of hot cocoa.”

They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking.

The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”

“Am I rich? Pity, no!”

I looked at my worn-out slipcovers. The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.

Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.

I tasted the potatoes and stirred (搅动) the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too.

What does it mean to say that we live in a world of persuasion? It means that we live among competing interests. Your roommates need to study for an exam may take priority (優先) over pizza. Your instructor may have good reasons not to change your grade. And the object of your romantic interest may have other choices.

In such a world, persuasion is the art of getting others to give fair and favorable consideration to our points of view. When we persuade, we want to influence what others believe and how they behave. We may not always prevail—other points of view may be more persuasive, depending on the listener, the situation, and the merits of the case. But when we practice the art of persuasion, we try to ensure that our position receives the attention it deserves.

Some people, however, object to the very idea of persuasion. They may regard it as an unwelcome approach to their lives or as a control. Just the opposite, we believe that persuasion is unavoidable—to live is to persuade. Persuasion may be moral or immoral, selfless or selfish, inspiring or discouraging. Persuaders may enlighten our minds or make us hurt. Moral persuasion, however, calls on sound reasoning and is sensitive to the feelings and needs of listeners. Such persuasion can help us apply the wisdom of the past to the decisions we now must make. Therefore, an essential part of education is learning to resist the one kind of persuasion and to encourage and practice the other.

Beyond its personal importance to us, persuasion is a need to society. The right to persuade and be persuaded is the basic principle of the American political system.

8. We can conclude from the passage that persuasion means ____ .

11. The passage mainly tells us ____ .

A. how people persuade

C. that persuasion is both good and bad

Diane Arbus is known for creating intense black and white photographs of very unusual people. She used a special camera that produced square shaped images. One art expert said Diane Arbus turned photography inside out. Instead of looking at her subjects, she made them look at her.

Diane Arbus was born in 1923 to a wealthy family in New York City. After finishing high school at the age of 18, Diane married Allan Arbus. Mr Arbus worked in the advertising department of her fathers store.

It was Mr Arbus who gave Diane her first camera. Diane soon decided to take a class with the famous photographer Berenice Abbott. The Arbuses eventually started taking photographs of clothing. These images were used as advertisements for Dianes fathers store. After the birth of their daughter, Doon, the Arbuses started a business together. Their purpose was to photograph clothing fashions. Diane Arbus was the stylist. She would prepare the hair and faces of the fashion models who wore the clothing being photographed. Allan Arbus took the pictures.

The couple soon had jobs from important fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harpers Bazaar. Their work was very successful during the 1950s. They became part of a group of artists that were helping to redefine visual culture. They were breaking with past traditions to create a new look for a new decade, the sixties.

But Diane was not satisfied with her secondary role. She wanted a more active part in making photographs. She wanted to explore her own artistic expression and freedom. To do this, she stopped working with her husband. Then she started taking photography classes at the New School in New York City.

Dianes teacher, Lisette Model, influenced her in many ways. She showed Diane how to use a camera like an expert. She also taught Diane to use her art to face her doubts and fears. Miss Model once said that Diane soon started “not listening to me but suddenly listening to herself.”

As the saying goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Thats because this healthy food choice is supposed to be full of nutrients. The apple at the supermarket, though, might be so old that it has lost many of its nutrients. But soon there might be a way to check the quality of fruit by scanning it.

Scientists at Food+Future coLAB have come up with the idea of a handheld spectrometer (分光儀) that scans food. The machine will work by shining infrared (红外线的) light on a piece of produce. By measuring how chemicals in the fruit or vegetable take in the light, the scanner can recognize the foods chemical makeup.

“The machine can tell you exactly how old an apple is, how many calories it contains, what nutrients are present inside it, and even small differences in taste,” Greg Shewmaker of Food+Future coLAB recently said.

For the new machine to be useful to consumers, researchers first need to create a database that contains possible chemicals for a particular type of fruit, like an apple, for example. Scientists will need to scan lots of pieces of produce to collect this data. The information collected will allow the scanners to tell customers the quality of fruit.

Once consumers know whats inside an apple, they can decide if they want to buy it. Knowing fruit quality may also affect how a store prices produce. “We can price produce based on the nutritional value,” Shewmaker explained.

Food+Future coLAB has already created a working model of its machine. It says you may see one in your local supermarket within the next few years. Then deciding whether youve picked the healthiest fruit will be just a quick scan.

8. Why does the author mention the saying about apple at the beginning?

A. To prove that the apple is full of nutrients.

B. To introduce the topic of the fruit scanner.

C. To advise people to keep healthy by eating apples.

D. To state that the apple is the most tasty among fruits.

9. What do we know about the spectrometer?

A. It is powered by infrared light.

B. It is useless in many customers eyes.

C. It can help customers decide which fruit to buy.

D. It can improve the quality of fruit and vegetables.

10. According to Shewmaker, whats a spectrometers influence on a store?

A. It makes a store more attractive.

B. It provides price reference for produce.

C. It enriches customers knowledge about food nutrition.

D. It creates a database about the chemical makeup of fruit.

11. What can be the best title for this text?

A. The Fruit Scanner B. The Priced Fruit

C. How to Scan Fruits D. How to Pick Fruits

Professor Reason recently persuaded 35 people to keep a diary of all their absent-minded actions for two weeks. When he came to analyze their embarrassing errors, he was surprised to find that nearly all of them fell into a few groups.

One of the women, for instance, on leaving her house for work one morning threw her pet dog her ear-rings and tried to fix a dog biscuit on her ear. “The explanation for this is that the brain is like a computer,” explains the professor. “People programme themselves to do certain activities regularly. It was the womans custom every morning to throw her dog two biscuits and then put on her ear-rings. But somehow the action got reversed (顛倒) in the programme.” About one in twenty of the incidents the volunteers reported were these “programme assembly failures”.

Twenty per cent of all errors were “test failures”—primarily due to not verifying the progress of what the body was doing. A man about to get his car out of the garage passed through the back yard where his garden jacket and boots were kept, put them on—much to his surprise. A woman victim reported, “I got into the bath with my socks on.”

The commonest problem was information “storage failures”. People forgot the names of people whose faces they knew, went into a room and forgot why they were there, mislaid something, or smoked a cigarette without realizing it.

The research so far suggests that while the “central processor” of the brain is liberated (解放) from second-to-second control of a well-practiced routine, it must repeatedly switch back its attention at important decision points to check that the action goes on as intended. Otherwise the activity may be “captured” by another frequently and recently used programme, resulting in embarrassing errors.

12. Whats the purpose of Professor Reasons research?

A. To find the causes which lead to computer failures.

B. To compare computer functions with brain workings.

C. To classify and explain some errors in human actions.

D. To show the difference between men and women in their reasoning.

13. Which of the following might be grouped under “programme assembly failures”?

A. A woman went into a shop and forgot what to buy.

B. A man returning home after work left his key in the lock.

C. An old man was trying to put on his socks with his shoes on.

D. A lady fell as she was concentrating on each step her feet were taking.

14. The underlined word “verifying” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “____”.

A. checking B. stopping C. changing D. improving

15. According to the passage, the information “storage failures” refer to ____ .

A. the removal of ones total memory

B. the temporary loss of part of ones memory

C. the breaking of information collecting system

D. the separation of ones action from consciousness

Do you struggle with business writing? Are teams and individuals asking for help with their business writing skills?

16 Since 1990, we have been helping employees and managers write better.

Everything written in business reflects the image of the company and the writer. 17 This means organizing ideas well, checking that the language is accurate and that the presentation is professional. Writing successfully is always the result of careful planning.

Before you start writing, you need to decide why you are writing and what you hope to achieve. This will help you decide what to include in your writing and whether to write an e-mail, a letter or perhaps a report.

Meanwhile, think about readers. 18 The structure of what you write can guide readers and help them understand the content of your writing so that they can respond.

While you are writing, you need to think about how you organize your ideas. Writing a report may include presenting data and linking complex ideas; writing a memo (備忘录) may include describing a situation and dealing with ways of improving it. You need to understand how to construct paragraphs. 19

After you have finished writing comes the very important process of revising, checking and correcting.

20 You will find plenty of useful information about effective business writing. In our courses, participants get tools, tips, techniques, job aids, and follow-up resources to help them write better.

A. Contact us.

B. Assess your skills here.
